I'm not religious in any way, and I certainly share your sentiments regarding being preached to. I was just confused as to what you meant. Thanks for clarifying. |

I didn't even know Tooth & Nail was a Christian label for the longest time. MxPx and mewithoutyou never really sound like they're preaching at you. But, I haven't listened to anything MxPx has released in the past 5+ years so I can't speak for any of that stuff.
Anyway, since everybody keeps bringing up bands like The Beatles and Led Zeppelin, you have to realize people probably make the same argument every generation. In the 80's, a lot of music was crap, but it's been 30 years and people are still talking about The Cure, Echo and the Bunnymen, and tons of punk bands from the time. Give it a few years and everything will be different. |

When the Velvet Underground were around no one was remotely interested in them, 25 years later they were one of the most influential groups of all time.
It's very difficult to predict what will be influential because in order to do that you have to predict the future. There is also an assumption that there will even be an interest in popular music. Imagine someone had asked in 1940 'What current big bands will people be talking about in 25 years?' when in 1965 people were listening to Dylan and The Beatles and couldn't care less about big bands.

what do you think webforums are now? it's not 1997 anymore. even then anyone who really liked Metallica knew who Budgie was due to their cover of Breadfan. i think the big band that will be worthy of note in 25 years will be the one that figures out how to speak to the masses without pandering to established methods and mediums. until then we're all just tuning up. |

Bands I hope to still be raving about in 20-25 years: Dresden Dolls/Amanda Palmer Brand New Pink-she just keeps getting better Sonata Arctica-they didn't get terribly big until about 2000 MGMT might have a chance, but it's a little early to tell

This is just a short list I thought of on the spot
The Good The Mars Volta The remnants of At The Drive-In who moved on from Post-Hardcore to Progressive Rock, they'll be known for their unique playing, conceptual albums, high energy, and Cedric's Robert Plant-esque vocalsRadiohead Personally I am not the biggest fan of Radiohead, but they became extremely popular particularily because of Kid A combine their electronic, progressive, unique sound with a downloadable album in which you could optionally pay they embodied the spirit of 00's.The White Stripes An influential and important band of the 00's they kept Garage Rock alive and well and they did it all with no bass player!Eminem Yes, I know he released The Slim Shady LP in 1999, but his popularity and dominance over African-American hip-hop/rap stars reigned supreme.Kanye West Okay, I can already hear the bitchin' and complaining, but as much of a douchebag Kanye is, his music is very good and he took sampling to a WHOLE 'NOTHER LEVEL.Arctic Monkeys Their debut album Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not became the fastest selling album in the UK and their combination of British accents, guitar attacking sounds, and first-person narratives has us singing along. The Bad Green Day Two words: Washed up. Let's all agree on this and face the facts that if you bought any of their albums in the 00's you were an American Idiot.Every Disney Channel Star (Jonas Brother, Miley Cyrus, etc.) I think the title explains it all ^^^^Lil' Wayne Besides coining the term "bling" and appearing on every album in the 00's no one will remember him, although its amazing he did all this in between prison and his "purple drank" binges.Kanye West Even though he released some great music, he is still a jackass.

I know, random list, but still, the 80's were an important period to look at if you want to see where our music is at today, the alt-rock revolution, the beginnings of indie rock, the continued evolution of rap, punk and pop (whether for the better or worse is your call), just don't be bashing the 80's
