Still not best Stones.
Regardless of influence, it aint a punk album. Do you think it's better than Beggar's Banquet?

I rest my case.

Sympathy for the Devil isn't overrated in my book, but how is Some Girls punk? I probably prefer it slightly over Beggars Banquet actually, although I don't think it's a better album, and I love both. Tattoo You is the overrated Stones album, I think

That's one of those songs you like more for the words, not the actual music.

I don't think so, the lyrics are meh but the music swings and it has the delightful 'ooh-ooh' backup singing

For me it's both the lyrics and the music. It's one of the all time best Stones tunes.

Don't get me wrong - the arrangement is catchy but IMO the primary interest in the song is the lyrics.

I've always debated to myself if it was a pro-devil or an anti-devil song. The title is Sympathy for the Devil which would make it seem like a pro-devil song, but is it really? I guess he's just saying what the devil might be thinking.

I always took it more as a song about us (humankind) being the devil. And to have sympathy for the fact that continuously throughout history we've done some terrible things but at the same time, we can't forever condemn ourselves because of this, lest we desire to never grow and learn from it, for it's important to have an appreciation for the fragility of the human condition and our easily corruptible nature.

It just occurred to me that maybe the title Sympathy for the Devil was supposed to be ironic.

I don't think it's pro or anti anything. It's just a fun song about a mythological character.

^ A mythological character in Mikhail Bulgakov's The Master and Margarita.
