If you think music has decreased in quality, you don't listen to much of it.

The quality of music hasnt gone down at all, your desire to search for what you like appears to have reduced though. IF you want good music to be spoon fed to you, you will be disappointed as the majority of the chart stuff is poor, disposable music that in 6 months has no relevance at all.

This isnt a new thing, for as long as there has been music there wil have been terrible music as well as great stuff, its just that with hindsight we tend to forget the bad music, or at least sweep it under the carpet, and just remember the classic stuff. And in our younger days, when we are at our hungriest for music we will search deep for the stuff that we like.

I suggest you actually do some research into modern soul artists, ones that arent in the charts, and see what you can find. You'll be pleasantly surprised.

Or you can carry on moaning that music is dead.

Default Is music from the 50s, 60s and 70s better than todays music?

Im not sure. I kind of think the last era of good music was the 90s and everything from the 21st century has been crap. Im sure someone is going to say that its just an opinion and there is no such thing as good or bad music. That is true, but for the sake of the conversation, what do you guys think?

There has always been good music, and bad music. Classic music has the benefit of being screened down the decades, so that the worst has been filtered and forgotten.

Exactly. And there's plenty of great music around these days. It's just, as you say, that the crappy music hasn't been filtered out by time yet.

i still think the 60s was the renaissance of music and there hasnt been another time like it. it was a revolutionary period. what bands of today will make it through the filter of time?

There are way more great bands playing today than there were in the 60's. There's also way more bad ones. The good ones will always be remembered by someone and the bad ones will be forgotten. Saying that everything from the 21st century is crap leads me to believe you haven't listened to much music from today. I have listened to a lot of music from the 50's (and even earlier than that) all the way up through 2011 and I can tell you for a fact that there is a greater quantity of good bands playing today, you just have to look a little harder to find it because 99% of music in the mainstream is crap. You can't really say any time period was better than another, just that you prefer one.

I think it's very closed-minded to say "everything from the 21st century has been crap". Every decade has something to offer.
