Default Politics in Music

Music has been a voice for politics throughout history: Bob Dylan, John Lennen, Bob Marley and many other artists have used their music as a form of expression for their political views.
Do you think that the maintream success and publicity of political music is dependent on its genre ?
In relation to Muse, as an alternative band, do you think their political songs do not have as much mainstream success as M.I.A or U2?
