For a band that really hated Nirvana, Song 2 is a pretty Nirvana-ish sounding song and thus a lot of people over here think of them as Nirvana ripoffs because they're pretty much unaware of anything they did before that.

Am I the only one who finds that amusing?

Song 2 was written as a joke by the band. It was making funny of typical American rock and just about written on the spot hence Damon's nonsensical lyrics. The irony of it was it became a big hit in the states. But it wasn't their first hit in the states There's No Other Way and Girls & Boys were also hits, though I don't know if they were big ones.

This. It was 100% percent a parody of grunge and them fooling around with the American 'underground'. It's sad that it is basically the only song my friends know blur for.
