This is yet another reason why the Wu deserve to be in:
It's been 22 long hard years and still strugglin Survival got me buggin, but I'm alive on arrival I peep at the shape of the streets And stay awake to the ways of the world cause **** is deep A man with a dream with plans to make C.R.E.A.M. Which failed; I went to jail at the age of 15 A young buck sellin drugs and such who never had much Trying to get a clutch at what I could not touch The court played me short, now I face incarceration Pacin', going up state's my destination Handcuffed in back of a bus, 40 of us Life as a shorty shouldn't be so rough But as the world turns I learned life is Hell Living in the world, no different from a cell Everyday I escape from Jakes givin chase, sellin base Smokin bones in the staircase Though I don't know why I chose to smoke sess I guess that's the time when I'm not depressed But I'm still depressed, and I ask what's it worth? Ready to give up so I seek the Old Earth Who explained working hard may help you maintain to learn to overcome the heartaches and pain We got stickup kids, corrupt cops, and crack rocks and stray shots, all on the block that stays hot Leave it up to me while I be living proof To kick the truth to the young black youth But shorty's running wild, smokin sess, drinkin beer And ain't trying to hear what I'm kickin in his ear Neglected for now, but yo, it gots to be accepted That what? That life is hectic |

Though, I do love Run DMC and Grandmaster Flash. I like NWA, though the rhetoric isn't always great. But their talent was undeniable. As for the earlier comment that Wu-Tang Clan was essentially hip-hop's first "supergroup," I think NWA was hip-hop's first supergroup.

Take a good look at this album. When you're a generic indie kid like i was and then you stumble across this it's like having your head smashed against a wall. All my prejudices were thrown away and that album became one of my favourites instantly. The flow, the lyrics, the characters on show, the production, the sampling... all perfect. I'm going to be completely blunt and say anyone with even a passing interest in music should listen to the Wu at some point. Essential. |

I'm gonna have to be the odd man out here, as I voted no to the Wu. It's easy to put out good albums when you have 10+ separate artists contributing to it. Separately, most of the Clan's artists are good, but they lack unity and cohesion as a group IMHO. I'm in no way belittling them, but I wouldn't give a HOF nod to a group which consists of little more than 5 albums of collaborations by separate artists.

Fully. I'm not disregarding their solo talents, but throwing 10 (okay, actually 9) rappers together to form a supergroup will do little for group unity and cohesions, regardless of how much talent each one brings to the table individually.
Dont get me wrong, I love the WTC, but in my mind they don't deserve a HOF nomination. |
