Controversial, maybe, but here goes another one! We'll see how it goes...
Nominated by Conan Bill Hicks Bill Hicks was an American satirist, stand-up comedian and musician. He was originally from Texas, but would later live in and perform New York City and LA respectively. His stand-up comedy, often described as "dark poetry", was both nihilistic and bleak - but it was also hillarious. He would touch on controversial topics such as abortion, flag burning, drug use, and American Politics. He was a frequent critic of many aspects of standard social behavior. Some of his routines have been described as "dissertations with jokes thrown in", with Hicks himself jokenly describing himself as "Chomsky with dick jokes." Hicks died of cancer in 1994 at the age of 32. Although not strictly a musician, his works are can be emotionally pulling - his humour is undeniable, but his negativity, increasing dark material and self-deprecation can pull you back and forth - making you laugh and loathe at the same time. This is done both through his material and (on his later albums) music. When he found out he was dying, he recorded music to two of his unreleased albums. Sometimes the music was merely backing the material, but other times it took center stage, with entire tracks on the album dedicated to the music. Standouts for me have always been She's Got A Broken Heart and The Wizard Has Landed from Arizona Bay and Rant in E Minor respectively. I debated for a while when I was writing this nomination whether or not to include videos of his work. I decided I would leave that up to other Hicks fans, as I believe the only way you can really experience the hillarity, the tragedy, and the genius of Bill Hicks is to listen to his albums.

Absolutely, a brilliant performer who wasn't afraid to piss people off. Even to their face.

I voted yes, because I love Bill Hicks and he is often a topic of discussion on this forum. However, in retrospect, the front page of this thread does say:

I voted yes... he may not be noteworthy for his music, but there was a major ripple effect of his work as a general performer that affected musicians... Tool is a particularly good example here.

I think I'd be a good idea to include him in the Hall of Fame. Not only is he discussed all the time here, but I think comedians in general should have a fair shot at this.
1. Because they frequently tour with musicians, and have become as much a part of the 'concert culture' as music acts. 2. They are artists just like musicians with a spoken form of expression. 3. They share the same realm as musicians. Audio is the most common form of release for them - they have albums that can be purchased along side any music CD. 4. They can be very influential to music. The example with Hicks (as brought out) is Tool. Some might disagree and things like "this is MUSICbanter dewd", but I'd like to point out that what we all are at heart is audiofreaks and comedy is another form of it... kind of like Television is to Cinema. We keep out DVDs of South Park or Family Guy right next to our DVDs of The Hangover and The Godfather don't we? Why not let comedians into our HOF? At the very least it's something different that we've never done before. |

I'm all for it! Let's do something new and original here... and what better choice of comedian than Bill Hicks for this sort of action!
