That's exactly what I am unclear on. Does he not like him because he doesn't have a message or does he think he could like him because his music has a message...?

I would speculate that the MB community at large doesn't really fit comfortably within the Neil Young demographic, but his work with Crazy Horse, in my opinion, would be a lot more accessible and interesting to many of the posters on here than his milder solo albums.

I only have Harvest and, to be honest, I haven't really given it much of a chance. I'll abstain 'til I've a) done that and b) heard another album or two. Safe to assume he's getting to the next round anyway though.

Absolute yes. Here are some links for the unsure people out there, some of my favorite Young songs. Actually I would vote yes if these songs were the only songs he wrote. I think they're that good.
Grooveshark -- Listen to Free Music Online -- Internet Radio -- Free MP3 Streaming <--- i dont know how well this will work which is a shame since this is an amazing performance. YouTube - Neil Young - Needle and the Damage Done YouTube - Neil Young - Heart Of Gold <----- the songs starts about 1:48 in YouTube - Neil Young OLD MAN YouTube - Neil Young - Don't Let It Bring You Down

He' written so many classic and timeless tunes, that one time or another nearly everyone has heard, Heart of Gold may be one of his best known songs, but it has such a resonance no matter what age your are... you gotta give the guy a yes vote!
