I Prefer Musicians Who Are Drug Addicts
'no junk, no soul..'
Most of the time druggie musicians are able to dig deeper within themselves because they know that pain, the highs and lows that come with being an addict. Dont get me wrong, drugs arent responsible for creative genius, meaning a no talent loser is still a no talent loser even if he takes drugs. But when a genius uses drugs, a lot of the time timeless art is produced. Need examples? Charlie parker, the most brilliant alto sax player to ever exist shot up heroin and drank like a fish. Bob dylan and Johnny Cash were speeding out of their minds. Do I even need to mention the Morrisons, the Hendrixes, the Cobains.. all these straight edge, clean and sober musicians nowadays disturbs me. I guess thats why music today is boring as hell Last edited by bogey_j; 01-03-2010 at 05:57 PM. |

I'm not about to say that you might not be onto something, but I might suggest that your logic needs some rearranging. Perhaps it's the pre-existing pain, the overwhelming need for catharsis that is both the impetus for addiction and the creative drive for the artisitic process; aka the tortured soul theory.
The common denominator between drug use and the creative process- sometimes, but not always, is a need to deal with, or otherwise escape overwhelming emotions or life circumstances. To reiterate, this is not always the case, and there are as many exceptions to this as there are cases which illustrate it to be true, however one need only look at the history of modern music to see that an overwhelming majority of it's greatest minds were plagued by serious addiction. |

certain drugs i feel get rid of a certain level of self consciousness and allow music to flow a bit more freely. so...the talent was there the whole time. a lot of people think smoking bud allows them to be more creative. for me, i've noticed when playing guitar after smoking i'm a little less worried about playing something revolutionary and totally original and i will just play what sounds good to play. for the guys on the harder stuff...i think they are tortured and produce good stuff because it clicks with us on a very emotional level that only someone experiencing such an extreme can articulate, and then drugs just happen to be an unfortunate added circumstance. it is not that the drugs are helping. there are plenty of bands with their members on something who don't produce anything worthwhile at all. |

I don't like musicians on drugs cause they are usually better, I just like the very raw sound that unprofessionalism creates. Like compare Frusciante's solo albums done while messed up on drugs, and see the clean albums he made after... I'll choose chaotic dirty sounds every time.
Didn't vote, as it's not much of a general thing... A talentless bloke will remain talentless, drugs or no drugs.

Pure gold indeed, one of the most heartfelt albums I've ever heard, specially that song. It gives me goosebumps at every time.
