Well the votes are in!

Metacritic's Best of 2009 list

Scroll down to the bottom. Apparently MPP by Animal Collective has garnered both the highest mentions in critics' top ten lists, as well as the most "#1" votes. I can't say I'm surprised. I definitely have to agree with it. I can't say I've listened to a better album since it released all the way back in January. It is widely responsible for the majority of my 362 AC plays according to Last.fm. It is my personal album of the year.

Isn't it funny though that other high top ten mentions like I And Love And You and Middle Cyclone didn't get a high metascore though (compared with MPP's 89)? Or how about the two highest scoring albums don't get even one mention in any of the lists? I'll grant Nirvana's album came out not too long ago, but Live in London came out several months ago (and it was pretty good live album at that).

So what do you think of the list and its "discrepancies"? Anything super-surprising? Also, for the non-rap users, take it on good faith with me that the Raekwon album was great.

i rarely agree with these kinds of lists...although i do on occasion use them to find some new stuff. everyone's tastes are so different...how can any of these lists be definitive?

I don't get what all the hub-bub surrounding Merriweather Post Pavillion is about. It's a trippy album with a cover to match, but beyond that I just don't get it.

Yes...it was a risk, but there are better AC albums. I'm prepared for any ill-will that I've incurred.

Y'all just hate good pop...>:[

TotalHenshin 12-30-2009 07:09 PM

It's not just Pop, it's PROG-Pop! :P I don't feel the need to defend MPP though. MPP doesn't need anyone to defend it.

SATCHMO 12-30-2009 07:15 PM

If good pop sounds like The Beach Boys being played underwater, then yes, I, in fact, hate good pop.

CanwllCorfe 12-30-2009 07:18 PM

I haven't heard any songs from any of those albums.. actually I only know 5 of the artists on it.

Good! :D I'm happy to know I'm not the only one

It's a surprisingly diverse list. I don't necessarily agree with a posthumously released live Nirvana album being at the very top of the list, but as far as "Top" lists released by music publications go this one is only mildly nauseating.

It's not an actual publication. It's an aggregate site that averages other critic scores. Hence why I said it's odd that the two highest scoring albums (i.e. highest average score from critics) was not in any of the actual top ten lists from various publications.

Also, In the Flowers is the better song representing MPP.

^^^^ How is that relevant to this thread? Was that 2009's most migraine inducing piece of electronic music?
