I'm trying to think of the precursors to them. I recall The Black Dahlia Murder, who pushed me into the extreme forms of metal, The Preachers for electronic stuff, The Tallest Man on Earth for folk, Richard Skelton for modern classical, and... that's all I can remember.

The Police of all bands was the first band I ever went out of my way to sit down and listen to. I remember I was sitting on my bunk bed with a boom box and headphones with their greatest hits. A few years later heard the Yeah Yeah Yeahs when I just turning a teenager in my brothers car. I would say that was definitely what sparked my interest in music more than anything. I had such an immediate obsession and fascination with them. It felt like it was music that I wish I made. I don't know why but I was scared to voice how much I loved them and it was a while before I heard the album again.
Looking back I really created a prison for myself often. Like at that time I really badly wanted a guitar but I was really really isolated and never would talk to my parents. If I would have asked they would have got me one but I could never work up the courage to do it. I even tried making anything with just fish lining and boxes/nails because I wanted one so bad hahaha. It drove me crazy when my brother got a guitar that Christmas and he didn't even ask for one. I didn't really voice that I was particularly upset but I was dying inside. |
