Ten years old, my coach driving me to my soccer game when he popped in Number of the Beast by Iron Maiden. Hooked me for life.

Not at all sarcastic. Music is a beautiful form of art.
I was just confirming what you said

Joe Hisaishi, a Japanese composer is what got me listening to music, but it was really Led Zeppelin that started everything off (more specifically "Kashmir"). But it was Hendrix who got me obsessed with his music and lead me to the blues and other genres.

Kayo Dot for sure, someone suggested I listen to Choirs of the Eye and that got me looking at all different kinds of music. Turns out I didn't really like the things I was hearing every day and just had no context, WHO KNEW?

Choirs is pretty amazing. Like, it pretty much got me into metal, and more Avant-Garde Music.

I've said before that it was basically David Bowie who got me started appreciating music as I do to this day, but in the interest of being precise, this is the actual album that got me going;

I wouldn't quite call it my favourite of all his albums, but it's definitely the one that made me start looking for other stuff that'd rock my little socks as much as this did.

I remember coming home from school every day after I'd just started high school and me and my pal would sit for hours listening to Dead Kennedys, Bad Religion and NOFX albums. And other bands of that ilk. Back when I was 12 or 13... that's what got me into music in a big way. Didn't have a computer or anything to download music, it was just trial and error with CDs from a local record shop. We knew we liked "punk" though.

I can't believe people are saying they got into music via Kayo Dot - I'd imagine you'd need to have more than a passing interest in music to know of that band. Were they really the FIRST band that clicked with some of you? Jeez. Reminds of Beck's interview with Thurston Moore where he (Beck, that is) mentioned the first record he'd ever bought was a Keiji Haino one.

I've listened to music all my life, but the band that have REALLY had an impact on my music listening is Rush. Gateway band to all sorts of proggy goodness, including Yes, Gong, Soft Machine, Mike Oldfield and the Soft Machine.
