Default Sugar's Journey into the Unknown

Sugar's Journey into the Unknown

As many of you might know, I don't listen to a lot of the music that's popular with the Music Banter members.
The music I know best is probably one of the most unpopular and least accepted types of music on the forums.
The other music I know well is classified under pop, and since it's overplayed and often looked down upon, it's the first music recognized if I list any of it in my interests.

Generally, this is what I've been listening to lately.

Coheed and Cambria
Lady Gaga
Chiodos
Green Day
Beirut
Citizen Cope
Emarosa

Now, am I against listening to other types of music? Of course not.
Would I be considered differently than other members because of some of the music on my list? Absolutely.
I was told once that most people with my music taste would essentially be made fun of on these forums, and that it was good that I kept my music tastes on the "DL."
Obviously I did that on purpose, but I shouldn't have to.
I don't listen to the Beatles, I don't listen to Radiohead, etc.
It's not because I hate them, it's because I just don't listen to them.
Okay well... I really don't like the Beatles, but that's not the point.
I don't CHOOSE not to broaden my horizons. I listen to a song. I like it. I keep listening. It just so happens that the people I'm around listen to music that I happen to like, and that music is often today's "emo" while the music I dance, drink, party to is today's "pop."
I’d just like to say, that I’m not ashamed of what I listen to. I’m not ashamed at all. So that’s not the point of broadening my horizons. Instead, it’s the fact that I should know about the music everyone’s talking about. I should have something to say in more threads, I need to be more knowledgeable.

"Have you heard Mezzanine by Massive Attack? Everyone should have that album, I reckon."

Have I heard it? Nope.
Have I heard of it? Nope.
Does everyone have it? Probably.
So I'll take a journey into the unknown, at least to me.
I'll take what everyone knows, I'll take what no one knows, I just have to broaden my horizons.
Here goes...

Mezzanine's definitely a good place to start. Branching out and listening to things you're unsure about is probably the best decision you can make. I came to this site ridiculously close minded, and, while still very much so, I'm open to a lot more musically and have found some great great great albums and artists.

I don't have any Massive Attack.

I also think that you shouldn't feel like you need to listen to what everyone else on the boards is listening to. First of all, there is a huge diversity on the boards, it's not just you who has a different taste than everybody else. And, second, you like what you like. However I am interested to see if you do check out much of the music being recommended on the boards, what you think of it.

That's how I feel as well. Actually, you led me to really like pg.lost, which is a band I never would have discovered on my own.
In my journal, I mentioned you when I reviewed the band.

Story! You've grown up so much, I feel the need to mention this.
Besides that, I'll have you know that I really am not listening to this music because of everyone else. I hope you read my post through. ;] It's more because it's always good to know about everything you can, whether you like it or not. With music, and also books, I've noticed that it's better to have knowledge about as much as you can.

I feel like there are a lot of similarities on here. Like I feel like if DInosaur Jr. or Operation Ivy where to be scorbbled on my Last.fm there wouldn't be any complaints. It seems like even if people don't like certain bands on here whoever they are they still get respect because the people who listen to them are respected if that makes sense.
Knowing that Jackhammer listens to Massive Attack tells me they are most likely a respectable band because he's given me some good recommendations in the past and seems like a smart guy.

This seems really interesting and I'm looking forward to it, are you taking open recommendations here or will you just be talking about recommendations people gave you elsewhere?

Whilst I love people stepping out of their comfort areas regarding music, never ever listen to bands because you feel you have to. I was young once ( a bloody long time ago) and was close minded to a certain degree.

Just take your time and like what you like just because an album is loved doesn't always mean you should like it.

I'm the same way of course, in fact most of what I've listened to in the past month or so I would never have even heard of without being part of the forum. I know exactly how you feel, with movies, books, and music, but I just wanted to say that listening to a recommended album is one thing, and making yourself like it because it was recommended is another, so please don't do that.

But I did read your post. I trust that you won't.

Goodness gracious, all of you.
Please take this as a positive experience with me.
As much as I respect you all, I would never adopt your taste in music just for the sake of popularity.

(May I ask) what type of music is that?

In a way I feel the same way about the I music I listen to, too. I could write most of what you said, except the part about The Beatles.

Are you taking suggestions, or are you writing about the experience of discovering new music you find?

More of the new age "emo" like I said. I try not to bring it up a lot cause I'm not good with genres.
Think Bamboozle.

I'm absolutely taking suggestions.
Thank you. [=
