AH yes ,

But would you not expect to find Rock AND Pop in a rock/pop section , rather than rock/pop being a genre in itself

Thats true, I guess it is its own genre.. It'd be wierd to see both rock and pop in there together.
Ah so thats another genre. Y'know one day Im gonna sit down and count all the genres and sub-genres.. *Sigh* Could be fun I guess...

It was my job for four years to take some notice of them, and rock music has been improving its sales position year on year throughout that period.

I`m not denying that , but as a whole Hip Hop has overtaken Rock.

Based on what? Sales? No. New releases? No. Newly signed artists? No.

All hip hop has overtaken rock on is exposure in the mass media, but hip hop will soon lose its appeal and be replaced by the next "rebellious" niche.

I'm pretty sure hip hop is the top money maker in the US, I'm not sure what you're referring to franscar. I haven't looked at the numbers, but it seems really obvious to me. I'm pretty sure guys like nelly, eminem, 50 cent, Lil Jon, Usher, Chingy, and Beyonce and the likes are making BUTTLOADS of more money than Maroon 5 or Ashlee Simpson or whatever the hell people are buying these days.

In the US there is a larger market for hip hop, but worldwide doesn't reflect that in anything like the same manner. And even in the US, outside the mammoth budgeted acts like Eminem and Usher that practically buy the rights for their stuff on a loop on MTV, the second and third tier of artists, those that are on major labels but with lower advertising and recording budgets and those who are on independents, don't sell a particularly massive number of copies, and at the moment a lot of artists are still riding the wave of popularity that engulfed hip hop during the east-west coast rivalry of the Tupac era.

I find that the music industry is not willing enough to take a risk and give new sounds a chance. It seems that only hip-hop and rap or pop is getting thrusted down our throats and I think that is not a good thing. I would like to see a current change in the listening patterns of the general public. What about indie music or punk/rock or hard rock metal sounds even some gothic or ambient or new age would be better than what is currently being blasted all the time. How about even some world music for a change. I am tired of the same old sounds. Don't get me wrong I love all kinds of music even the ones that I am tired of hearing being played all the time I just think that there needs to be a change and the industry needs to take more risks when it comes to music selecting, after all they are the ones that are signing up the bands/groups, musicians and singers. That American Idol {Hung} come on enough is enough. Lets get original and unique here. Give us fresh new sounds. Something pleasing to the ears and heart and soul.
