really? the album that was on "best of 2009" lists by the end of January?

just because they're the darlings of the indie press community doesn't make their records any more worthwhile. Merriweather Post Pavilion received an absurd amount of hype even before it was released. and it doesn't take a genius to spot a decline in quality from Sung Tongs to this garbage.

what really raises my ire is the fact that so many other up-and-coming indie bands are trying to emulate Animal Collective's sound. the result: an endless parade of cookie-cutter indiepop bands that clog the arteries of indie press. and while you might appreciate the wellspring of generic crap that gets hyped, but i find myself abhorring most new releases under the indie radar.

so yes, Merriweather Post Pavilion is overrated.

I thought MPP was very good at it's high points. My Girls and Daily Routine are fantastic songs.

I will agree on this though:

It's a shame that Yeasayer did this... they had such a great sound.

Because we all care. I can't stand albums being hyped and there's been a fair few like that (Grizzly Bear and Mastodon spring to mind) that i haven't warmed to but that said MPP is a brilliant album. The people listening to and emulating it don't make the slightest difference.

I think I'll have to go with this little gem.

And of course my own band's album. Which was recorded this year. It just has yet to be released.
