I said I had no interest in listening to the two most hyped albums of this year, but never did I say that it was BECAUSE they were hyped. I'm just very apathetic to indie, the same way you are apathetic to black metal.

And I see your universal acclaim and raise you this. I've heard enough indie by now to know that it's not really my thing, but when a band within a genre I enjoy comes along and releases something like that, I pay attention.

And before you say "well that's just close-minded and you're not giving them a fair chance", I fell into the trap of listening to the most hyped indie albums last year, and there's a good few hours of my life that I will never get back. And that is why when a band like Grizzly Bear comes along and gets all of this sudden praise I can only shrug.

Indie is not something I feel obligated to listen to anymore. I'll listen to albums that interest me and frankly Veckitamest and Merriweather Post Pavillion don't do that (and looking back, neither do Vampire Weekend's self-titled or Microcastle).
thats fine and i understood all of that(before this most recent post). but i dont see why you need to say something like that because you dont like / are ambivalent towards someone's music. whatevs lets just let this die.

That's called elitism and I thought I had left this behind especially on a forum such as this.

I personally couldn't give a crap if an album is loved or hated by critics or fans and it's my choice whether to like an album or not. People seem to think that by dismissing certain albums you are dissing on a particular genre which is horsecrap. I could turn it around and say that peoples disdain for certain genres means that fantastic albums are not even listened to in the first place and don't stand a chance if they are not talked about over the net or websites.

I keep seeing that accusation being thrown around here yet nobody has given examples of people doing it.

I just think it's a lazy way of lumping people together when you don't have a proper argument personally.

No not you

I'm bored of this whole 'oh people don't like this because of -insert generalisation here-" attitude when you say you don't like something.

Agreed. I don't like Animal collective. It's got feck all to do with popularity or with a non mainstream attitude. I listened and didn't like. Simple as that and dissing a member or their opinions because of their age annoys the crap out of me especially when they counter balance their opinions whether their opinions are liked or not.

I mean when was the last time on this forum someone actually said 'I hate this album because it's really popular?'

I don't ever recall it happening.
