Default Bands Pulling Out Of Gigs

Is this more common than it used to be? I live in Cambridge, UK and pretty much every time I organise a gig at least one band will drop out at the last minute. No I always put a backup in place, or put on a solo artist for 10 mins to open up the night, and if someone pulls out, I'll get them to play for longer.

But, whilst talking to someone that's been living and playing in bands around Cambridge for a few more years than me, he reckons it was almost unheard of a few years ago, and bands seemed more motivated back then.

Anyone got any thoughts, or does this just sound like a rose tinted "It weren't like that in my day!!" type rant?
