I'm listening to it again, I know a lot of people really like it but I'm with you Goofle. It's just nothing special. I don't dislike it, nor do I particularly like it. After about the third track I swear it just recycles the same melodies for the remainder of the album. Grimy indeed.

Throw Me the Statue - Moonbeams (2007) This is overall pretty weak, turns out the track I heard last week via a coworker is the album's only real strength after one listen. Were I forced to rate it now, I'd give the album 2/5. The guy just doesn't have a good singing voice on most tracks (that is often off key), and the music is a bit too indie electronic for my taste, bedroom amateurish. Not that I could do better, it's decent but too many things bug me about it. The album cover is not one of them. A couple of tracks are decent but not worth the trouble...it gets quite unbearable by the end.

At first I really thought it was a dude, and then it really occurred to me those titties would not be on a man. Nice tits.

Cult of Luna - Vertikal (2013) In a way I kind of feel sorry for Cult of Luna, they've always been one of those second tier post-metal/atmospheric sludge metal bands, building their own niche in the genre but still living in the shadow of ISIS and Neurosis. Now that ISIS is gone and Neurosis has largely abandoned that style they have the opportunity to pick up the flag and charge into battle to really cement their status.... and they just kind of flounder around on this album. It's not really bad, but there's nothing particularly memorable except the things that make it annoying. Their inclusion of electronic elements seems well intentioned but poorly implemented and those parts are probably the most generic parts of the album. Maybe this is a grower, but at 67 minutes in length it's one of those albums that just doesn't really want to make you go back. Here's hoping Rosetta or The Ocean have something new up their sleeves this year, or else I may have to just write this genre off, because there's really been nothing of interest released in the last few years. |

Boring melody? Both 'Celebrity Touch' and 'Feel Like Falling' count as some of the best pop-oriented stuff I've heard over Riverside's last four records. Then you have that killer bassline that anchors 'The Depth Of Self-Delusion', plus there's all the proggy goodness of 'Escalator Shrine' too. :/
I may not be the most eclectic musicgoer in the world, but I know my prog....and S.O.N.G.S. is a pretty damn good record even if its not blasting your speakers to smithereens.
