EPs that are really F*cking awesome
Show me them.
Here are a few I consider the band's best work. These Arms Are Snakes - This Is Meant To Hurt You Moderator cut: image removed Les Savy Fav - Rome (Written Upside Down) http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA280_.jpg Nine Inch Nails - Broken http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/image....L._AA280_.jpg Lymbyc Systym - Carved By Glaciers (initially released as a 5-track EP, it was recently re-released with 2 additional tracks - remixes - that I'm sure weaken the impact of the EP) http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA280_.jpg |
Some more top-notch EPs that may or may not be their best work.
Dillinger Escape Plan (with Mike Patton) - Irony Is A Dead Scene http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/image....L._AA280_.jpg Aphex Twin - Come to Daddy http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA280_.jpg Clark - Throttle Promoter (also Throttle Clarence) http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA280_.jpg Tool - Opiate http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/image....L._AA240_.jpg |
I'm Lonely (And I Love It) - Future Bible Heroes
http://www.houseoftomorrow.com/i/cdart/lonely_large.jpg This EP is better than any of the full length albums I've heard from the Future Bible Heroes brand, just fully over the top with cheesy electronic dance music paired with the typical songwriting you'd expect from Merritt (which is by no means a complaint).. 'I'm as lonely as Mount Everest, and probably as high.' God love it. |
Skinny Puppy - Remission
Their first official release from 1984. When released on CD, it came with a bunch of bonus tracks so I always thought it was an LP. I recently made myself a copy, trimming out the bonus tracks, to hear it as the EP it was intended to be. http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/image....L._AA240_.jpg Squarepusher - Budakhan Mindphone http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA240_.jpg Boards of Canada - Hi Scores http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA240_.jpg The Mars Volta - Tremulant http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA240_.jpg |
Some great ones:
TV on the Radio—"Young Liars" http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...oung_Liars.jpg REM—"Chronic Town" http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...wn_-_R.E.M.jpg Mr. Lif—"Emergency Rations" http://www.dustygroove.com/images/pr...gency_101b.jpg Godflesh—"Slavestate" http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_HqLF_ZsyQC...eetcleaner.jpg |
Young Liars is good indeed. And I just downloaded Chronic Town earlier.

Zero EP - Smashing Pumpkins
I'm not much of a Pumpkins fan anymore, but I decided to keep this EP because it was just a real nice heavy rock sound that was missing from Mellon Collie. OK now that album did have some heavy songs, but for every heavy one you had 1.5 soft mellow ones that I found to be really boring. |

Boards of Canada - In A Beautiful Place Out in the Country
http://images.uulyrics.com/cover/b/b...he-country.jpg My Bloody Valentine had a ton of awesome EPs, some of the best of any band in my opinion. Sunny Sundae Smile http://jem.blogs.com/photos/uncatego...sunnycover.jpg Lush had some fantastic early EPs; Gala was a collection of their first 3 and maybe their best release (they turned crappy later). It included Scarlet, my favorite song by them, and a lot of their noisier stuff! http://images.uulyrics.com/cover/l/lush/album-gala.jpg Lastly, the Lazarus EP by the Boo Radleys could be my favorite EP from any band. It was the perfect combination of all their styles, and ran together perfectly. http://www.discogs.com/image/R-384062-1235108191.jpeg |
Oh yeah I forgot Call To Arms by BOTAR. That **** kicks ass. Thing is, I didn't bother getting EPs until somewhat recently, so my collection is a bit small. Oh well, it'll get better.

http://mediaportal.ru/uploads/posts/..._ac_ss500_.jpg Water Curses - Animal Collective Single-handedly lead me out of the musical dark age that was 8th grade. Pretty damn powerful for 4 songs. http://img13.nnm.ru/b/c/0/8/a/bc08a6...7b842_full.jpg Silver - Jesu |
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...atchAcidEP.jpg
Self-titled EP from Scratch Acid that predated most other post-hardcore. http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_rgzQrFqxCM...s400/ud059.jpg Stereolab's Crumb Duck -- their first collaboration with producer Steven Stapleton (of Nurse With Wound fame). http://www.auralexploits.com/ebay_im...zzOrHowl_1.jpg Debut EP from the Minutemen. Released as an LP but seeing as it's all of 16 minutes long I contest this. |

I think I'll look into the Scratch Acid and Stereolab EPs. I've never really been into Stereolab but your description makes it seem interesting.

Vaya is a good one. But the Lagwagon one isn't all that great IMO. I've only played it once though, yesterday coincidentally.

The Black Keys - Chulahoma
http://fatpossum.com/images-php/cove...lahoma-cvr.jpg I cum twice each time I listen to this. |
At The Drive-In have quite a few quality EPs. I was listening to El Gran Orgo earlier... it's another great one. Same goes for Stereolab. Also, there were more than a few kick ass no wave EPs, Mars, DNA, Swans, and Teenage Jesus & The Jerks (who only ever released EPs).
And of course: http://images.uulyrics.com/cover/p/p...on-pilgrim.jpg Really surprised no one mentioned that one yet. I'm sure that's got to be one of the best EPs ever. |

the first release by boy problems 2.0, boys & sex EP, is my personal EP of the year. |
http://m.blog.hu/la/langologitarok/i...arch_small.jpg
Representin' da mainstream! http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA240_.jpg Has two of their best songs on it and just generally kicks ass. http://blogdoedmilson.files.wordpres...ut-pompeii.jpg Just two songs but they encapsulate the vibe of a lazy summer afternoon better than anything else I've heard (short of Cesaria Evora). I crank it up every July and almost cry from the melancholy. http://farm1.static.flickr.com/116/3...fb5dfff8a7.jpg The only thing they put out, a pretty awesome bit of dance punk. |
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_IHL4cs57bg...n+Giant+EP.jpg
Has two of their best songs, Drops in the river and Mykonos. http://www.subpop.com/assets/images/2821.jpg In the reins - Iron & Wine and Calexico Was lucky enough to see them tour it. One of the best gigs of my life. Don't much care for his solo stuff but this is sublime. http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_XaR72qGjDg...rton+Senna.jpg Delorean - Aerton Senna Really made my summer. Sweet indie-electro. |

This thread is just riddled with great releases.
http://img109.imageshack.us/img109/4834/pizzats9.jpg This is probably my favorite thing they've done. http://dinealonerecords.com/files/re...arge.album.jpg Captures some of the best early stuff and of what is to follow. |

Guster's Satellite EP was awesome! Had a different version of On My Way Home.

Thor's Hammer was some good ****. Too bad they only came out with this:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...medagsnatt.jpg There are also many MBV EPs that are excellent, but my favorite: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...tineGlider.jpg |
