While I do like this album, I agree. It sounds like someone slapped some Anathallo instrumentals down and added some cheesy Bible proverbs about cookies, foxes, and shit over it. I think they peaked at Brother, Sister, where they found a clean folk sound without alienating their post-hardcore roots.

Yeah initially I didn't dig Brother, Sister that much because it was yet another step away from their hardcore roots, but I've come to like it a lot. I think I still like Catch For Us The Foxes better though. [A->B] Life was my favorite but I've mellowed out a bit so I guess I consider Foxes their peak.

That album was so terrific. And "Movies For The Blind" was pretty awesome too. And then we have Depart From Me. Hopefully, he's just in an "experimental" stage, and can rebound from this.

Dream Theater - Black Clouds and Silver Linings
Oh my, what a letdown. Not that it's awful, but it's not as inspired as some of their other releases. I've always hated Mike Portnoy's retarded rapping bits, and how low do you have to get to have one song consist entirely of other parts of the AA Suite? And the lyrics aren't great either, nothing on the level of "Blind Faith" or "Learning to Live". @BTown: I thought Black Gives Way to Blue was alright. It suffered horribly from the loudness war, and William DuVall is no Layne Staley, but it's not bad.

I actually think that Embryonic is one of their most interesting releases yet. It's has some very cool textures, but it's so noisy that it's exhausting to get through.

I've had many different opinions about this album since its release, but that's because I'm not really sure what I want to hear out of Alexisonfire anymore. As an experiment in other forms of punk rock... it fails, because it just sounds like Crisis but with less emotion and more monotonous singing. As an album that aims to provide hooks... it fails, because there's only about four memorable songs on it. And it certainly isn't artistic like their first two albums, so really, all I'm left with is an album that I can sort of appreciate, sort of enjoy, but am left depressed and wishing for the days of old. The Bedlam In Goliath was insane, heavy, long, chaotic, and extremely ambitious. After hearing a masterpiece such as that and going to this, it's really dissapointing. For any other band, this would be a perfectly acceptable debut album, but The Mars Volta are capable of FAR more, even if they choose to be soft. In the world of Mars Volta, this should be an EP. It's way shorter than their other albums, and I really have a hard time accepting this as a proper full length album from them. More like a fun little experiment they had that they're putting out to give their fans something to listen to while they wait for the next hour-and-a-half-long epic.

One thing I like about Octahedron is that it gives absolutely no clue as to what they are going to release next. Heightens the suspense for the next album abit.
