Top Five Records
I aim to make this thread not as spectacularly inane and unnecessary as the title would suggest. It's a little fun musical discussion inspired by watching High Fidelity again.
Here's how it will go... I'll state the first topic Top Five Records to Soundtrack a first kiss The poster below will then pick the top five records to soundtrack a first kiss, and then create a different top five that the person below them will then pick five songs for, so on and so forth. So yeah... go. |
Props for the fantastic thread idea.
5. The Jam - In the City: Perfectly captures the angst and confusion that I associate with my first kiss. "In the city there's a thousand things I want to say to you." 4. The Smiths - The Queen is Dead: Come on, it's the Smiths! 3. Daft Punk - Discovery: Happiness incarnate 2. R.E.M. - Green: Mature, beautiful songs that paint a perfect picture of an innocent, ideal romantic ordeal. 1. The Velvet Underground - Loaded: Standing on the corner... suitcase in my hand. Next Up: Top Five Break-Up Records |
Blur - No Distance Left To Run "I won't kill myself trying to stay in your life"
Daniel Johnston - True Love Will Find You In The End Incredibly simplistic yet haunting display of optimism. The Replacements - Answering Machine Perfectly portrays the embarassing "I must win her back!" attitude of all break-ups. The Smiths - I Know It's Over As previously stated, it's THE SMITHS. Elvis Perkins - The Night & The Liquor Soundtracks the first big 'break-up drink'. Next: Top Five Records to Soundtrack a Night Out. |
For the record, my five were albums. Must be include songs or can we specify albums?
Anyway (Songs): 1. A-Ha - Take On Me: I can see myself driving around to this one. 2. The White Stripes - Fell in Love With a Girl: The night may be young, but it is short and quick. Act on impulse! 3. The BPA - Toe Jam (feat. David Byrne and Dizzee Rascal): Danceable, filled with horns and David sounding better than ever, Toe Jam is a very fun and silly romp. 4. Daft Punk - One More Time: You know we're gonna do it right tonight! 5. Lou Reed - Perfect Day: An epitaph for the night, solemn yet melancholy. Next: Top Five Love Songs |
Sorry to randomly post but this has to be in the top 5 break up songs
|
Youtube isn't working atm.
1. The Police - Every Breath You Take 2. Asaf Avidan & The Mojos - Her Lies 3. Bee Gees - How Deep is Your Love 4. Oasis- Wonderwall 5. The Beatles- All My Loving VERY cliche'. Probably could have done better but I'm just being lazy :p: Top Five Records to Listen to While Destroying Things |
1. Choking Victim - No Gods, No Managers: Energetic, upbeat, lively ska punk with a bit of a heavy metal edge to pump up the destruction a bit more.
2. Slayer - Reign in Blood: Don't really think anything needs to be said here. 3. All Shall Perish - Price of Existence: Pretty heavy and brutal... 4. Devildriver - The Fury of Our Maker's Hand: Good metal, better beats, fast paced. 5. Gov't Issue - Any album, really Top Five Records to Chill Out To |
1. The Feelies - The Good Earth: Six years after they brought a sense of urgency to the burgeoning world of post-punk, the Feelies went totally low key and created this totally unknown gem of an album. Better than Crazy Rhythms, and way more "chill."
2. John Coltrane - My Favorite Things: Oh yeah I can zone out to these modes for sure. 3. Primal Scream - Screamadelica: Way more chill than the title and band name suggests, I can put this on any time of day and be relaxed in minutes. 4. Beck - One Foot in the Grave: Such low key folk with some crazy experimental stuff interspersed there to keep your attention. 5. Scott Byrnes - Aegri Somnia: Totally unknown ambient guitar stuff. Alright, I can dig it. Helps me do homework and fall asleep. Up Next: Top Five Albums that Tell a Story |

2. The Who - Quadrophenia/ Tommy 3. Van Morrison - Astral Weeks 4. The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band 5. Bob Dylan - Blood On The Tracks Probably cliche, but still VERY GOOD albums! Next: Top 5 Albums To Listen To When You Have The Blues |
no.1- S. F. Sorrow - The Pretty Thing of course, number one. The songs are breathtaking, "Balloon Burning" comes to mind here. And you just got to read the lyrics/story, or you'll be missing a lot without it.
no.2- We're only in it for the money - The Mothers of Invention also a classic. Such a tremendous collage, joining the album through the first to the last track. Also, you've got to read the sleeve in that album too. no.3- Sergeant Pepper's LHCB - Da Beatles it's got to be on the list somewhere. I don't think it can be the best concept album, well hardly a concept album imo. But it still has a back story to it. It's somehow the evolution of these 4 guys into their alter egos. no.4- The Dark Third - Pure Reason Revolution I'm gonna put that one here, to put some 00's flair into this list. I also got it in the themed comp. trade, so it was the first thing I thought about when "Telling a Story" criteria was mentioned. Really nice. no.5- L'histoire de Melody Nelson - Serge Gainsbourg the most known Gainsbourg album in the English talking world. Really nice album also, and I couldn't think of any other to complete my list. [Didn't want to put The Wall, so overrated story/album] That was fun. Top 5 depressing mellow songs. Edit: Damn! I spent so much time thinking of my list jtwilliams beat me to it. I'm still pretty proud of my list. |
Quote:
1. The Velvet Underground - s/t: Velvets at their saddest and best. Works. 2. R.E.M. - Automatic For the People: Come on, Everybody Hurts!? Come on... 3. Joy Division - Closer: :( 4. Leonard Cohen - Songs of Love and Hate: Mostly the hate part. 5. Bruce Springsteen - Nebraska: No matter how down you are, there's no way you're as down as the guy Bruce Springsteen is trying to be here. Anyway: Quote:
yeah |
Quote:
1. Antlers - Hospice: Pretty damn depressing, if you listen to the lyrics it's about someone dying from cancer. 2. American Music Club - Love Songs for Patriots: While this album might be seen as cheerier than their old albums because it sounds like theirs a chance at redemption, I don't like anything else by them and it's just depressing to me, like a possibility you'll never get to. 3. The Raveonettes - In & Out of Control: The whole album isn't completely sad, but pretty much all the songs are really dark and more than a few are downright depressing. Not sure how mellow it is... 4. Dirty Elegance - Finding Beauty in the Wretched: This is an ambient trip-hop type album with a combination of dark, haunting, depressing, and occasionally upbeat songs that everyone should hear. 5. Kimya Dawson - I'm Sorry That I'm Sometimes Mean: This is up there on a Hospice level. The music sounds much more upbeat, and there isn't a concept or story running through the whole album. But there's a lot of songs about different types of depression, and "Hold My Hand"... a song about child abuse that she discovers and everyone ignores, so she drowns herself and the child to stop the violence they constantly live with. Hard to get worse than that. Top 5 Nostalgic Albums Dang... now we have two going at once because I took to long. |
Just as a side-note - by records, I mean individual songs. So, to alter the last post, the next choice is...

And, because of the last List Posters tardiness... Top Five Records To Woo The Practically Unwooable |
5. The Stone Roses - I Wanna Be Adored: Basically Joel McCale's character's monologue from the most recent episode of Community. Please, please please have sex with me. I have no friends and it would be a tremendous favor if you did so. Please.
4. The Smiths - Asleep: If she's not all over you after Moz starts singing, she's a dumb bitch. 3. R.E.M. - You Are the Everything: Basically the best love song ever. No big deal. 2. Radiohead - All I Need: Super cool song that deals with love from what appears to be an objective perspective. Science! 1. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Into My Arms: Best athiest anthem/love song ever? Honorable mention: U2 - With Or Without You: WHOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH WHOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAOOOOOH WHOAAAAAAAAAAH WHOAAAAooooh. Up next: Top Five Songs You Would Play if Lou Reed Came Over to Your House |
Alden Penner - Ghost of a Creaky Crater
John Zorn - Laylah Selda - Yaylalar Art of Noise - Moments in Love Elevator to Hell - Hurricane I don't really know why but those would be some I would probably pick. Maybe some John Cage, Masada, or Sun Ra too. Edit: Maybe something by Oren Ambarchi too. Top Five Songs to Paint a Fence to On a Hot Summer Afternoon |
Summer Cats - Fulton Gurls
Sublime - Wrong Way Stereolab - Miss Modular Beck - Girl The Roots - Ital (The Universal Side) Summer Cats would kick off the painting with a pretty upbeat song, then the rest would be upbeat, pretty chill songs that really feel like a hot summer afternoon to me. And I stuck Roots in there because I'd want a bit of hip hop and it seemed to fit best. |

Oh did you say 5 best songs to listen to when it's raining? Cool. Here goes.
1. A-Fei - Nympheas: This is a slightly experimental song based around a bit of a haunting/depressing piano melody and a glitchy beat that is perfect for watching raindrops rolling down the window. 2. Creedence Clearwater Revival - Have You Ever Seen the Rain 3. The Cure - Pictures of You 4. Nick Drake - Place To Be 5. Mt. Eerie - Between Two Mysteries Don't think there's too much to say about the songs, they all pretty much just are good songs to listen to while you sit and look at rain running down the window. Aww yeah.
1. Carbon Based Lifeforms - Hydrophonic Garden: The epitome of rave music in my collection anyway. Repetitive, trippy psytrance with just the right dose of occasional lyrics. 2. Shpongle - Nothing Lasts... But Nothing Is Lost: This is trippier music, but not quite as good for dancing to or feel good. 3. Infected Mushroom - IM The Supervisor: Pick things up with some heavy, fast paced music with equal parts psytrance and metal. 4. Hallucinogen - Twisted: I think this might be the first psychedelic trance type release, and it is damn good. Perfect for a rave. 5. Omnimotion - Dream Wide Awake: This is more like trippy ambient music, it would be the perfect thing to shuffle in with the end of Shpongle and a few CBL tracks to end the evening. ****, I almost forgot again.
