Will the 00's be remembered fondly?

I think so, it depends what area of music you are remembering! Mainstream wise it has gotten increasingly worse in comparison to previous decades but theres has always been plenty interesting bands/artists outside of the mainstream. Arcade Fire is a good example and more recentley A Place To Bury Strangers, to name but a few examples. I've always argued that there is always good music out there, you just have to look for it! The main issue is the lack of originality or proper musicianship in the mainstream. Bring on the 10s!

I disagree about mainstream geting worse. I'd say it's about the same.

I actually think pop music quality has increased since the 90s. That was the worst, at least in this country .. Anyone who says different was either too young to remember or, frankly, likes ****.

Are Arcade Fire outside of the mainstream? I thought they were well in it.

Yeah, considering that they've been nominated for multiple Grammy and BRIT awards I'd say they're definitely well inside the mainstream.

But yeah, I agree that if you examine pretty much any decade you're going to find a very similar crap:good ratio. Though in my opinion there is a special circle of hell set out for those who created 90s mainstream music. NSYNC and the Back Street Boys terrorize my nightmares.
My main problem with the aughties, is that we have very few things that are exclusively from this decade. Everything is a slight twist on some other genre or trend. I guess it's largely to do with the internet, and how so much is only a couple key strokes away. There's so much out there now, it's harder to sort the wheat from the chaff.
Haha i just realized I completely pulled an aughty here by not bringing anything new to the table but essentially rephrasing what others have already said. oh well.

^I'm not sure I agree .. I don't think The Prodigy sounds like a twist on something from the 80s. I don't think the Crazy World of Arthur Brown sounds like a twist of something done in the 50s. Neither do I think Metallica sounded like a twist of something done in the 70s.

I mean, you could say it but you'd have to stretch your imagination a bit sometimes - there would be some pretty large twists. I definetly agree that ideas are overall less fresh this decade.

You obviously need to listen to more Motorhead.

Anyway, I wasn't talking about specific bands, I was talking about the various musical trends of the 00s. Yes, they are largely, in one way or another, twists on things that have come before. But that's also true of the musical trends of any decade.

I think I phrased that wrong. because upon rereading that I sound ridiculous; of course that's true for any decade. I'm having some difficulty finding the right words. I guess what I meant is that we have nothing that stands out as something I'll think of as uniquely a 2000 thing, whereas when I think of past decades very distinct and concrete genres come to mind. This is probably an oversight on my part, as really, it does all overlap.
