Best Ways to Find New Music?
 

hey, I was just wondering what some of you guys use to find new music that you like. I mean, I've used Pandora and I just signed up at lastfm but I was just wondering if there was any other ways to find music that you like. My main sources include my friends as well as my mom haha. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

For me it's other members of the forum or LastFM, and blogs that I find interesting, putting some good album reviews and d/l links.
Or I just search what influenced my favorite bands or which band were influenced by my favorite band etc etc ...

Also you can Google **** like "Greatest Russian Zebra Metal albums of all time" or "Most underrated masochist punk albums" and usually some douchebag made of list of it on Amazon.

I use the itunes store. I never buy anything from there, but it's good for getting an idea of what I eant before I go pilfer it fo' free somewhere else.

Yeah, I honestly think the iTunes store gives me better recommendations sometimes than last.fm, I usually find the recommended bands on there to be more or less crap (not always, it's occasionally good). You could also try listening to last.fm radio or pandora, that usually gives me some good ideas. You can completely customize your own station with pretty much as many bands, genres, or songs included as you want and it plays similar stuff.

If I'm exploring a genre I'm not familiar with, I tend to just cross-reference multiple sources. I tend to avoid popular magazines and what have you.

If it's a genre I'm already familiar with, I seek out people IRL, people on forums and chat rooms and what have you, and ask questions regarding bands I hold in high esteem.


^^^^ Yep. Scanning linear notes and reading interviews is generally fruitful.

Yep, I would recommend iTunes as well. I've found so much great new music by using the iTunes store, clicking bands that I like and then using the "Listeners also bought" feature. Good stuff.

Basically what some of the others have said:

- Rateyourmusic.com

- Post on active music forums (could be the forum of any of your favorite bands even) - people often link to interesting albums, plus the music banter (pun intended) really increases your awareness of what other music is out there.

- Music blogs. I usually google blogsearch an album I want to download, find a link on some blog, then see if that blog has more interesting music. You find a lot of keepers this way. Then put the blog in your RSS reader.

- Pandora radio

- Last.fm users/groups
