They have obviously gotten you to believe that they have no image, which explains why you are sitting there defending them. The "I'm weird, look at me" is just as much an image as "I'm a badass, look at my lip piercing" is.

I did, only i didn't use the term boring... I just dislike a lot of it.... Everything from Modest Mouse and Wolf Parade to TV On The Radio and Interpol to The Shins and The Kills to Bright Eyes and Cursive... I've heard it all, and i just don't like it... However, i do like Flaming Lips (who for all i know probably don't even qualify as indie), My Bloody Valentine and bands of the like... But their sound isn't consistant with most indie groups, though indie isn't suposed to be consistant, it's suposed to be diverse... And DISPITE that, i still dislike a great deal of it... Because a lot of bands just seem like they are actually trying to suck and make the worst music they possibly can because they're confidant enough to think that it wont hurt their success badly enough so they can still make a living off making bad music on a small label, because they think "If we suck ass, the bigger the chances that Pitchfork Media will give us rave reviews and enough people will buy our albums that i can buy a new mattress that isn't covered in my own bodly fluids".

And while it's not a true genre, it has a huge fanbase, one that claims to be "underground" even though it's not... A fanbase of pseudo hipsters who criticise other genres (even prog) for being all about image... Which is funny, because perhaps an image is just what that these guys need... What else do they have?... Their music?

Perhaps you ignored the use of ""... Which was to signify that i was just quoting what you said.

And besides... The only prog musicians who used weird costumes were guys like Gabriel and Wakeman... That's pretty much it... Well maybe The Residents if you consider them prog.

Again, prog DOSEN'T have a consistant image... Not a fashion image anyway, though most prog musicians are middle aged men who are ugly as sin, that might qualify as a image perhaps.

It's not a marketable image, pop punk bands who make simple, catchy music and wear mohawks and goth eyeliner are marketable, prog bands who make extremely complex, inaccessible music and wear halloween costumes are not marketable, thats why the two are not worth comparing and that by doing so you're making it seem like you're very ignorant of the genres that you're comparing... If you see a man dressed up as a freaking flower, the first thing that comes to mind isn't going to be "wow, this guy is cool, i'm gonna buy his album".

And actually... Many prog bands don't use drugs, in fact, most musicians in prog bands have to follow strict guidlines NOT to use them.... Frank Zappa would fire anyone in his band that he suspected of using drugs and nearly all prog bands follow the same philosophy... They take the precise execution of their music very seriously, and for music based around complex structures, it requires very skilled, disciplined and devoted (and sober) musicians to pull it all off.
