I could listen to an album with no drums and be perfectly happy.
I could listen to an album with no vocals and be perfectly happy. The only person who can do a bareable falceto for the majority of a song is Thom Yorke. I love atleast part of every genre. I don't think american indie is boring. If you sit around all day and only listen to American indie you need to find ears because I'll admit it is rather redundant

You're a moron. The worst thing about prog has always been it's image, in fact it dosen't have much of a image at all and if it does, it's a totally random and ridiculous one, as examplified above... Progs "image" is one of the main reasons it is so unpopular with the media.... Comparing it to pop punk is ridiculous. Pop punk bands (and punk bands in general) have the entire "we're rebels, we're misfits" image going for them, and kids everywhere eat it up... What does prog have?... A bunch of ugly old farts in halloween costumes?... How is that a marketable image?... Thats the most stupid thing i have ever read from you, and thats saying something. |

EDIT: You know what? Forget everything I just wrote in this post.
The pictures that you posted speak for themselves. Prog is just as much about portraying an image as pop/punk/pop-punk/emo/etc.. |

I think it`s more performance art than image myself.
It`s not like they wear that stuff going down the shops to buy a paper

And the costumes were just thematic illustrations that bands used during live concerts, and they were often connected to the themes and lyrics of the music itself, as a means of performance art like Urban said, Gabriel wore costumes because he played different personas and characters, like Bowie did, but to a greater extreme... ... And so what, prog fans don't give a sh*t about the image, they just like the damn music, and critics just use the image to criticize the music (which has nothing to do with image anyway) when they run out of other valid reasons to criticize it... And it's not like Peter Gabriel actually tries to convince people that he is a flower. Pop punk bands actually use their image to market themselves towards people who think they are something they are not... Which in my opinion, is more pretentious than prog could ever be. Prog bands don't take themselves anywhere as seriously as critics claim they do, it's just another excuse to bash the genre. |

You think that Avril Lavingne covers herself in eyeshadow and chains to buy a cup of coffee?
I doubt it. I also never claimed it was a marketable image, though it has proven effective for people who think that the only good music that has ever been made was created by a band that dresses up like flowers and witches and switch time signatures every three minutes during the course of their hour long songs. |

But this whole discussion just proves one of my points. People who listen to music based off of the politics are stupid. Prog may be in some shape or form about having a image(I think in prog it's more about having a image rather than fitting in with the image) but the music is better than pop punk so that's all that god damn matters.

Marquee Moon may be the better album, but Adventure has Television's best song Human After All isn't all that repetitive or boring... when it's played live I don't care what anyone says, "Gravity's Rainbow" is a million times better than "Atlantis To Interzone" Rufus Wainwright's "Across the Universe" is better than the original Jose Gonzalez's "Heartbeats" is not |
