Default Bono and Live Aid

U2 participated in the Live Aid concert at Wembley Stadium for Ethiopian famine relief in July 1985.[16] U2's performance was one of the show's most memorable; during the song "Bad", Bono leapt down off the stage to embrace and dance with a fan. Initially thinking they'd "blown it", it was, in fact, a breakthrough moment for the band, showing a television audience of millions the personal connection that Bono could make with audiences.[17] All of U2's previous albums went back into the charts in the UK after their transcendent performance

Having just read that on wiki it made me think that Bono was worried about people accusing him of using the event to promote U2 so he's been making amends ever since.

Every band that played there had a increase in record sales afterwards.

You'd have to be really shit to play in front of 400 million people and not have any more record sales.

How was Bono making amends?

I think he cares about what he says he cares about. I don't think he's making a mea culpa for jumping off stage to hug a fan, or doing a good show at Live Aid. Considering his lyrics he writes even from his first album, I think he was alway thoughtful, I don't think he changed that much since he was young either. I think he used his fame to point out social evils in the world, I think he knows that and with fame I think he feels he needs to do good and be the spokesman of our generation. I think he truely believes in Noblesse oblige.

^ I disagree to an extent. The thing that bugs me about Bono is the fact that he wants, or seems to want credit for his good deeds. He's really arrogant and goes out of his way to say, "Look at me, look how much good stuff I'm doing for the world, aren't I great?!" There are so many more musicians/ famous people who have done a great deal for the underprivileged but they don't make a huge thing out of it; they do it because they generally care. Bono is also one of the biggest hyporcites in the media I have ever come across. One example I can think of is the fact that he moved U2's publishing company from Ireland to the Netherlands to avoid tax, shortly after claiming that Irish taxes should be increased so that more of it could be donated to charity. If he does generally care about what he says he cares about then he certainly isn't portraying that attitude.

Using the event to promote U2? WTF?
Performing in a charity event in front of thousands of people and millions more who are watching on television IS promotion, but I can't really find anything wrong with it.
Really, that is the dumbest accusation that a person could throw at him...
