OK then here's my next list. Not much in the way of indie bands, but this is (mostly) stuff I like (see the asterisk). 1. I fought the law --- Nanci Griffith --- Blue roses from the moons 2. Carrie Ann --- Styx --- Edge of the century 3. Never knew I was losing you --- Westlife* --- Turdaround, sorry Turnaround! 4. Sphinx --- Eloy --- Chronicles 5. Spectre at the feast --- Arena --- Contagion 6. So pretty (Holiday romance) --- Paul Harrington --- What I'd say 7. Broken heart (Thirteen valleys) --- Big Country --- Through a big country 8. Pure hatred --- Tank --- Power of the hunter 9. Life's but a dream --- Lake of Tears --- Headstones 10. What about me --- Ten --- Far beyond the world * I defend the inclusion of this with the plea that I only downloaded Westlife's discography for my special on boybands. Really. I have Boyz II Men, Nsync and Boyzone in there too, but it's all in the interests of research. Honestly. No, really. I've marked the Ten song as my favourite, as I love this underappreciated band, though Arena and Big Country were close runners-up.

The Replacements I know. Not that song though. Rock Lobster is pretty good, not the best on that album, but decent. The rest are new to me, with the exception of Jon Spencer who I REALLY like. The Replacements song I hadn't heard was pretty good. Not exactly up my alley, however I think I like them more each time I hear more of them. Portico Quartet was interesting. I couldn't listen to "Prickly Pear" online, but I checked out "Knee-deep in the North See" as well as "Isla". Pretty decent. I will give them a proper listen this week-end, as I like what I've read on them and they have quite a different sound. Yuck was ok. Fat Possum record label, so they have something going for them. Overall not overly impressed with that song, but not bad by any means. Beach House was not for me. Far too pop for my tastes. I honestly didn't enjoy anything about it. Charles Gayle Trio Another song I couldn't find online. I checked out Streets, which wasn't bad. A bit different, and kind of reminded me of Capt Beefheart on a sax, a definite Ornette Coleman influence. March of April sounded like the track to hear from this album as many of the reviews had some great stuff to say about it. Solex Vs. Cristina Martinez + Jon Spencer Wow. Quite a cool mix of styles there. Dirty was not on Youtube, but I did find a sample on Amazon. It sounded good, for the 30 seconds I heard. I don't know what song I heard on Youtube but I liked it better than the sample of Dirty I heard. I wouldn't listen to them a bunch, but I would definitely put them in the rotation depending on mood. Pretty groovy basslines and atmosphere for sure. The Flaming Tsunamis were a surprise. I was just typing about how they were not much more than a below average garage punk band when the horns came in and threw me off my high horse. I still don't think I like them personally, but they are surely cool in that they have added horns to some pretty hardcore punk. Pepe Deluxé were pretty cool. Different than what I typically listen to, but definitely catchy, as well as different. I think they are my favorite of the bands I hadn't heard before. Anni Hogan I found only a sample of that song on Amazon which didn't reveal a bunch. I found her on you tube with "Itchy Ear", and it sounded like ambiance music. Not something I care for much really. Bonnie Raitt - Give It Up or Let Me Go - (Give it Up 1972) Rolling Stones - Dead Flowers - (Sticky Fingers 1971) California Transit Authority - South California Purples - (Full Circle 2007) Sonny Rollins - St. Thomas - (Saxophone Colossus 1956) Dire Straits - Wild West End - (Dire Straits 1978) Ash Ra Tempel (Kraut) - Cosmic Tango - (Starring Rosi 1973) Led Zeppelin (Bootleg) - The Ocean - (1973-07-29 New York) Brendan Benson - Let Me Roll It - (Metarie [us ep] 2003) Can - Outside My Door - (Monster Movie 1969) Greenhornes - Lonely Feeling - (The Greenhornes 2001) |

I mean it seems that most are just in a big hurry to post another ten of THEIR songs. Kind of a "Look at Me" thread, instead of the learning and eye-opening experience it COULD be. |

The Cure are super. Not one of my favorite songs by them, but still, its the Cure, so it is a good song. Bjork Bath SUPER. I've heard bits of Bjork over the years, but never really got into her. This was a very artistic piece. It fit the movie quite well, and what a beautiful video! Probably my favorite in the list. Radiohead. Never could really get a lot of Radiohead either. This song is not for me. Bjork Like Someone in Love is also beautiful. She really has a very lyrical voice. She is definitely brilliant and has that "special something" about her. Depeche Mode Clean was nice. It has been many many years since I've listened to Violator all the way through. Great memories, and great to hear this song again. Gary Numan Observer is another of those songs that I haven't heard in SO LONG. It was really great to reconnect with it again. He really was the pioneer that finally made electronica and pop work. New Order Denial is pretty good. I liked Joy Division and thought New Order did a pretty great job of continuing the sound after losing Ian Curtis. Depeche Mode Nothing to Fear is not bad. It's funny, cause I liked Speak & Spell pretty well, but when Clarke left I really liked Yaz WAY MORE, and thought Upstairs at Erics was so superior to Broken Frame. I think Depeche Mode kept getting stronger with each album, and obviously became an extrordianary group. After hearing this tune again, I really was too hard on the guys back then. VAST A Better Place was ok. Definitely can feel the influence of the 80's synthpop. Anathema Ascension was a nice instrumental piece. Probably my favorite of the non-Bjork songs... Pink Floyd (David Gilmour) - Blue Light (vocal version) - (Treeful of Secrets Disc 15) Red Hot Chili Peppers - The Power of Equality - (Blood Sugar Sex Magic 1991) Dream Theater - Scarred - (Awake 1994) Rush - Cygnus X1 Book I: The Voyage - (A Farewell to Kings 1977) White Stripes - Little Cream Soda - (Icky Thump 2007) Museo Rosenbach (Italian Prog) - Dell'Eterno Ritorno - (Zarathustra 1973) Acid Mothers Temple - The Creation of the Human Race - (41st Century Splendid Man 2002) Paul McCartney & Wings - Band on the Run - (Band On the Run 1973) Scorpions - Still Loving You - (Love at First Sting 1984) Doug Sahm - Don't Turn Around - (Doug Sahm & Band 1973) |
