Your parents' music
i love my mum's taste in music. occassionally she'll put on some westlife or il devo (at which point i'm forced to yell "that's not music, that's just noise" at her up the stairs) but just flicking through her CDs today, it's all full of oasis and kasabian and aerosmith, and i realise i love her
are you embarressed by your parents music? or do you owe your own taste to their good examples?

My father has good taste in music. He's into 60s rock, British folk, glam rock, punk, new wave, soul, country and classical. His CD collection was very important to me when my music tastes were developing at the age of 15-16.

My mothers taste is terrible but my dad got me into music and although his tastes are not amazing, his attitude and love of music definitely inspired and influenced me. At one time he had over 1,000 7" records all catalogued and he still owns about 500+ albums.
Now that I'm the Dad my 15 Y.O son is now coming around to accepting that his 'dad knows his stuff' and recently I had to upload some NIN, eDIT, Killah Priest and Foals for him.

My mother really has no taste whatsoever, just the other day she had me upload linkin park, creed, and some bootleg Chicago album her coworker gave her. Her favorite bands include U2 and UFO.
My father is the exact opposite. He never really influenced me or my tastes due to our limited contact, but he did work at Alligator records and currently has around 3k CDs and a mess of albums. He's really into stuff like kyuss and fu manchu, and has a ton of blues stuff. Honestly I couldn't care less what they listen to. I've never once had a conversation about music with either of them and I don't really plan on having any in the future. |

My mother and father both listen to whatever is on the classic rock radio stations, which would be tolerable if I hadn't heard them 1000+ times. It's really spoiled some classic songs. When my parents try to get into modern music, they end up listening to the likes of Nickelback and Incubus.

..good thread idea by the way.
My mom doesn't listen to music that often. Her tastes are what most middle aged women listen to: paul simon(and garfunkle), buena vista social club, leon redbone...I remember when I was kid she'd either play graceland, or that one bobby mcferrin album. My dads favourites are thelonious monk, ray charles, and the band, some classic rock staples and a lot of old soul and gospel music. He has a lot of random-azz selections in his cd library though: I remember he had public enemy-yo bum rush the show, one ramones album, he also had dance mix 93-which had bobby browns humpin' around, and the "I like to move it,move it" song on it--that me and my older bro listened to constantly....he also loves george jones...and he played the possum at full blast to get us out of bed for school, knowing he wouldn't turn it off until we got up...but I ended up loving george jones when I grew up. |

Lately my mom's been incredibly stressed out with work so I've shown her the joys of death metal and how it can purge the body of all that stress and frustration. My mom tried real hard to keep up with new music but just found herself getting sucked back into old habits, luckily I blast my music loud enough that she hears it and asks if she can have it. Every few weeks or so she'll give me her iPod and I add on a new bunch of music.
My dad on the other hand is still stuck in the U.K. '70's and '80's scene, I mean there are worse places to be stuck but every attempt I try at introducing him to new music ends in him going back to Joy Division. The last group I was able to get him into was the Canadian country group The Corb Lund Band but that was way back last year. |

If my dad was into Joy Division I would follow him into hell. Actually I probably still would just for the fact that he loves non mainstream Reggae.
