Your parents' music
i love my mum's taste in music. occassionally she'll put on some westlife or il devo (at which point i'm forced to yell "that's not music, that's just noise" at her up the stairs) but just flicking through her CDs today, it's all full of oasis and kasabian and aerosmith, and i realise i love her
are you embarressed by your parents music? or do you owe your own taste to their good examples? |
My father has good taste in music. He's into 60s rock, British folk, glam rock, punk, new wave, soul, country and classical. His CD collection was very important to me when my music tastes were developing at the age of 15-16.
|
My mothers taste is terrible but my dad got me into music and although his tastes are not amazing, his attitude and love of music definitely inspired and influenced me. At one time he had over 1,000 7" records all catalogued and he still owns about 500+ albums.
Now that I'm the Dad my 15 Y.O son is now coming around to accepting that his 'dad knows his stuff' and recently I had to upload some NIN, eDIT, Killah Priest and Foals for him. |
my dad's into bob dylan and the jam mostly. i hated both as a kid, but the further i drifted from my dad, the closer i drifted towards his music, wierdly enough
|
My mother really has no taste whatsoever, just the other day she had me upload linkin park, creed, and some bootleg Chicago album her coworker gave her. Her favorite bands include U2 and UFO.
My father is the exact opposite. He never really influenced me or my tastes due to our limited contact, but he did work at Alligator records and currently has around 3k CDs and a mess of albums. He's really into stuff like kyuss and fu manchu, and has a ton of blues stuff. Honestly I couldn't care less what they listen to. I've never once had a conversation about music with either of them and I don't really plan on having any in the future. |
My mother and father both listen to whatever is on the classic rock radio stations, which would be tolerable if I hadn't heard them 1000+ times. It's really spoiled some classic songs. When my parents try to get into modern music, they end up listening to the likes of Nickelback and Incubus.
|
My mom likes doowop. I can't really get into it, but I don't find it embarassing or unlistenable.
|
..good thread idea by the way.
My mom doesn't listen to music that often. Her tastes are what most middle aged women listen to: paul simon(and garfunkle), buena vista social club, leon redbone...I remember when I was kid she'd either play graceland, or that one bobby mcferrin album. My dads favourites are thelonious monk, ray charles, and the band, some classic rock staples and a lot of old soul and gospel music. He has a lot of random-azz selections in his cd library though: I remember he had public enemy-yo bum rush the show, one ramones album, he also had dance mix 93-which had bobby browns humpin' around, and the "I like to move it,move it" song on it--that me and my older bro listened to constantly....he also loves george jones...and he played the possum at full blast to get us out of bed for school, knowing he wouldn't turn it off until we got up...but I ended up loving george jones when I grew up. |
Lately my mom's been incredibly stressed out with work so I've shown her the joys of death metal and how it can purge the body of all that stress and frustration. My mom tried real hard to keep up with new music but just found herself getting sucked back into old habits, luckily I blast my music loud enough that she hears it and asks if she can have it. Every few weeks or so she'll give me her iPod and I add on a new bunch of music.
My dad on the other hand is still stuck in the U.K. '70's and '80's scene, I mean there are worse places to be stuck but every attempt I try at introducing him to new music ends in him going back to Joy Division. The last group I was able to get him into was the Canadian country group The Corb Lund Band but that was way back last year. |
If my dad was into Joy Division I would follow him into hell. Actually I probably still would just for the fact that he loves non mainstream Reggae.
|
My mom has mostly crappy taste but mi padre basically started my love of music and we continue to talk about it together all the time. He really has great taste except for occasionally when he gets turned on to some modern pop that I have to explain to him is not good.
|
I grew up hearing almost nothing but classical, baroque, opera, and ABBA (all of which I still like, by the way) in the house or my parents' cars. Luckily, around age 10, my parents let me start bringing home whatever music of my own and play it on their system. They got me my own stereo pretty quickly.
|
My parents like Led Zeppelin. Which was the first band I ever really paid attention to. Beyond that they think I'm weird for liking the kinds of music I like.
|
My mom doesnt listen to music ever, I have no idea how she does it, she loves to read but thinks any type of music is just a bunch of noise. My dad, thankfuly, enjoys music, he listens to the Rolling Stones, CCR, BTO, Bon Jovi, stuff like that so, I would say he's still with it, hahah, he likes any type of good ol' rock n roll, its hillarious sometimes when Im over at his house hes got the music pumped and hes singin along, he cracks me up.
|
My mom and stepdad, I can't say I share their taste in music all, my mom is real big on hair metal, post grunge stuff and Hall & Oates. Mom does like some good stuff though, she likes Janis Joplin and Rick James so points earned for that.
My dad is a classic rocker, but unlike most people here I can't really complain about that because I pretty much am one myself. |
Dad likes Bob Dylan which is pretty cool, but he also likes Bob Dylan's shitty henchmen, Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen, and lately he's into Billy Joe Shaver and it's really annoying hearing him sing his songs. He does enjoy The Clash however, and I burn CDs of my music and he has liked to some of it.
My mom's taste is pretty crappy, she likes 80's pop/rock like Bryan Adams, and she absolutely adores when my brother sings Coldplay and Jason Mraz songs on guitar. At least she tells my dad to cut it out when she gets sick of him playing Billy Joe Shaver songs. And neither of them can tolerate music with screaming, so automatic fail right there. |

me and my dad tend to like the same type of music my mom not so much
|
both of my parents enjoy Bachata and Merengue(look them up), and they used to play it ALL THE TIME when i was younger. back then i hated it, but now i enjoy it and i'm trying to cop some of their CDs for my computer, haha.
other than that, my mom mostly enjoys soft rock and older soul and r&b, which fostered my love for the genres as we used to listen to them on the radio on long car rides. my dad sticks mainly to Bachata and Merengue, but also listens to spanish singers who are accompanied by full bands, orchestras, and the like and sing operatic stuff. as for my music, my parents like it sometimes, they even like my band :yeah:, but they're not into the heavy stuff. i'll usually put the headphones on when they're around. |
I think I'm into the acoustic music I'm into because of my dad. The other day I thought, hey I'll introduce him to some Nick Drake, because I thought he wouldn't of known him, but as I put it on he was like "oh yeah, I knew of him before he died." I flipped out in a good way, haha.
Some of my earliest memories are of him playing 'Father and Son' by Cat Stevens to me on his acoustic guitar, which is an absolutely great song by the way, and a totally kick ass thing for a dad to sing to his son. He really likes Jackson Browne and all that classic stuff, really into the singer songwriter movement. My dad was in a ****ton of bands in the 80s in the local music scene, and he told me my first favorite song was actually 'Jeremy' by Peal Jam, and I used to call it 'Spoken'. Around my middle school age my mom got me into classic rock because she bought that two disc Led Zeppelin DVD. Before that I was in a Linkin Park phase but that snapped me out of it like a slap in the face. I was like 'who is that guy with the violin bow on his guitar!!!! zomggg' When I was little my mom would play the 'Jagged Little Pill' album by Alanis Morissete. I listened to it again recently and I've forgotten how great the lyrics are. Like a female Leonard Cohen or something. That led(haha get it? high five!) into The Beatles and I was obsessed with them for a while, which my parents loved. Our musical tastes diverged though, as soon as I bought that first Velvet Underground disc. Then I started telling them I'd rather not listen to Rush, I'd rather listen to other stuff, and when I put that in, their ears hurt. Then I found out about this site and the Pitchfork lists, and well, the rest is sort of history for my musical tastes. |
I have grown to tolerate my moms taste for 80s hair metal.
However I can't say the same for my 11 year old brother and his Motley Crue, Nickelback and Soulja Boy CDs. Most parents might be appalled by this because of the sexual content in their lyrics but that's not what bothers me. Dirty music isn't bad for children, sh*tty music is, exposing impressionable children to hair metal, post grunge and crunk pretty much qualifies as child abuse. |

My mom and dad got me into blues, and then soul, so for that I'll be eternally grateful. However, my mom likes these 80's/90's one hit wonder pop songs from people I've never ever heard of, as well as the other day had me download Barry Manilow and Neil Sedaka for her. :\ My dad is more on the rock side now days, mostly mainstream stuff. For a while he was spinning Ray Charles every day in this truck, that was nice.
|
My parents have dire taste in music, I'm not embarrassed by it, I'm indifferent towards it.
|
My mom likes pop metal and my dad likes ska and ****. I hate their music.

My dad isn't much into music, but the stuff he does like is pop-country and silly stuff like that. My mom has decent taste in music. She likes a lot of the terrible radio pop singles but she also gotten into some of the Boston, RHCP, Vivaldi I've had playing at various times.
|
What in the hell is with the ska hate? I guess people's idea of Ska these days is Sublime and No Doubt.
"Real" Ska and the 2 Tone stuff is in a whole different ballpark from that stuff. |

My mom listens to a lot classical music, probably because she grew-up playing piano. She says she likes the blues, but I'm not so into the blues yet so I don't know who she listens to. She's likes soul music, apparently. She was dancing to soul compilation I had and she knew who Redding was. Also she's into pop songs, I know this from her Backstreet Boys phase. I know she hates anything that sounds like The Velvet Underground (drone, distortion, realism in lyrics). I don't know her tastes that well and frankly I'm afraid to ask. Last time I asked she went on a rant about Barbra Streisand!
