I was like that until I was fifteen or so, I never listened to music, it was just noise to me.

My parents don't really listen to music much anymore, they'll listen to the radio when we drive, but other then that they only play music on our stereo thing at home once a month or so, it's kind of sad in a way. When either of them listen to anything, it's usually the Beatles, Santana, Dire Straits, or various classical artists, and based on talking to my mom she had decent taste in music when she was younger, not so much my dad, he was more into 70's soft rock stuff.

No one should be able to hate on Sublime though, they're classic, kickass for sure.

my parents influence my music so much growing up,...
momma, being 8th generation texan, instilled a love for texas singer wong writters at a very young age,...i grew uplistenin to jerry jeff walker, guy clark, kris kristpherson,.....stuff like that,...
she also introduced me to bands like supertramp and elo,.....
when i was a kid i thought she had great taste,....however

the older i get the more off the deep end she goes,.....she's listenin to top 40 because as she says 'im not someone's mother any more',.....thats not excuess for bad music if you ask me,....i think the last straw was when i cranked her car and that song about bustin some guys windows started blaring,.....no thanks

dad on the other hand,.....
part of my love of neil young is my love for my dad,.....we arent really close at all, but these are things i remember about him when i was little,.....he always had something neil young on hand,....and really liked traffic alot,.....and roxy music,......now days dad and i talk music more than anything and i find that, the older i get the more i realize dad reads the reviews in rolling stone and then tries to act like he's cool

and while i feel my parents are musically flawed at his point, they did give me a good spring board to leap from,....so for that i thank them

My dad almost exclusively listens to classical music, of which he has 1500 CDs and 1000 LPs. Beyond that he only listens to Dylan, Stone and Beatles, and that is very rare too.

My mother listens to very little music, and if she does it's usually folk, such as Dylan, Cohen or Donovan.

My parents had very little to do with my musical preferences, except perhaps getting my into The Beatles at the age of 12. But beyond that its evolution was driven almost entirely by friends.

My dad has pretty good taste in music, he loves Dylan, The Rolling Stones, classic rock and all that stuff, he also likes classical, jazz, country, and then he likes artists like Sufjan Stevens, the National, Guster and a lot of the stuff I show him. Except he can't really handle loud music.

My mom just likes soft rock, jazz and classical, she doesn't like any kind of loud music.

I remember going to school everyday listening to Fairuz [a lebanese diva ... she's like a goddess here] ... it's kinda the tradition ... all the radio stations put her songs from 5:00 a.m till 7:30 a.m and we have to listen to them every morning ... so all the parents should make their children listen to Fairuz while dropping them to school ...

But she's got the greatest songs ... she's been singing since the 50s and still having festivals around the world ... and now her son remixed all her folk songs to have a jazzy feeling ... and he's considered like the genius of middle east so he influenced the jazz artists in here, and also my parents introduced us to him.

but the thing is ... that my parents only listen to what the "normal" parents should listen to ... and when they weren't parents they just listened to the mainstream music ... so they listened to the BeeGees in the 70's and Pink Floyd in the 80's and now it's only local mainstream pop which is the worst kind of pop anyone can listen too ...

i still try to make my parents listen to Pink Floyd ... since they liked them when they were in their 20s ... but now it only seems like noise ...

But disco is always mainstream in here ... they got that exact in "Don't mess with the Zohan" ... lol ... and they were not exaggerating ... you put a disco song in here and people go crazy !

My parents are medical scientists and have no interest in music/ the arts whatsoever; they rarely listen to music and have no idea what I'm talking about when I try to explain an album/band to them to get them to try and listen to! So they definitely didn't have any bearing on my musical tastes growing up. My siblings are also extremely un-musical. In fact I'm pretty sure I'm adopted

Most of my musical influence came from my piano teacher I had as a child, and then subsequently from my friends/ own tastes. And music forums!
