Hipster Bands You Still Like

Ok MusicBanter is sort of turning into ElitistBanter and dismissing anything and everything hyped by Pitchfork. This thread isn't for debating what bands are hipster bands or the societal impact of Pitchfork. So come on MB, what are the hipster bands you can't help but love?

I fucking love Neutral Milk Hotel.

LoathsomePete 06-10-2009 07:40 PM

I feel slightly ignorant to hipster bands, they're completely foreign to me, what would constitute a hipster band?

Gone Sugaring 06-10-2009 07:41 PM

In The Aeroplane Over The Sea is my favorite album of all time. I can't help myself.

Double X 06-10-2009 07:44 PM

Aeroplane is in heavy rotation for me after 6+ months...

Gareth Brown 06-10-2009 08:01 PM

Animal Collective.

swim 06-10-2009 08:07 PM

It's not cool to like NMH and Animal Collective on here anymore? Fuck.

Alfred 06-10-2009 08:09 PM

Yeah, what happened? When I joined it was cool to like Pitchfork-approved indie, now we have to listen to protopunk and avant-garde metal.

FaSho 06-10-2009 08:11 PM

I like me some radiohead once in awhile...

You don't need to listen to Yeah Yeah Yeahs or Sufjan. I can tell you that now.

Do the Rapture still count as a hipster band? To this day I still think Echoes is the bee's knees.

IWP 06-10-2009 09:37 PM

Do you mean bands that are hip to listen to here on this forum, or irl?

IWP 06-10-2009 09:48 PM

In that case, HIM, Avenged Sevenfold (though I really only like their City of Evil album), Incubus, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Daft Punk, Metallica (hell alot of people I know who don't like metal like Metallica), Lamb of God (though I think they're very overrated) and Atreyu.

I think Darkest Hour will have the longest list in this thread. =P

lucifer_sam 06-10-2009 09:54 PM

i still like the Olivia Tremor Control, among others. although much of what once interested me about those genres now bores the pants off me tbh.

i don't like using that phrase anymore, if i can help it. most of my friends (and relatives) who listen to music regularly are somewhat inclined to steep themselves in that sort of music anyways, i usually don't bother them about it.

Fruitonica 06-10-2009 10:02 PM

TV on the Radio are probably my favourite modern band. Crystal Antlers EP is great as well. Assuming they're both hip.

On the other side of the coin - NMH and Animal Collective left me pretty underwhelmed, from Avery Island and Merriweather Pavilion respectively.

Antonio 06-10-2009 10:04 PM

ok, i'm gonna ask this again

WHAT THE FUCK IS A HIPSTER BAND?!?!

IWP 06-10-2009 10:05 PM

It's pretty much a band that all of the "cool" kids like.

gunnels 06-10-2009 10:05 PM

Anything that gets a 10 on pitchfork.

Turning into? It's freaking been that way.

But I think it's been a lot more openminded lately, thankfully.

Perhaps my vastly superior musical intellect has helped you all see the light?

PinkCigarette 06-10-2009 10:21 PM

Does Faith No More count?

No.

Meh, I don't really know what "hipster" bands are, I just assumed they were included.

Uh...Nirvana? Am I at least a bit closer?

Hipster basically just means the most obscure, godawful lo fi, twee pop, hardcore or post punk spawned abominations that Pitchfork can find and call the best thing to ever happen to music, until more than 12 people have heard of it and then it's crap.

sidewinder 06-10-2009 10:51 PM

Like others, I'm a bit confused as to what constitutes a hipster band. Sure I get that Pitchfork praises stuff like Neutral Milk Hotel, Radiohead, Animal Collective, Radiohead, and that generally it consists of "indie" bands. I enjoy a good chunk of the material from those bands.

The thread title sort of implies that because they are hipster bands we should be ashamed to still like them or something. Or maybe based on the actual OP it's that people are feeling ashamed but shouldn't.

Anyway...I'd love to add bands to the list but I'm really not sure who qualifies. Cursive? Les Savy Fav? Pinback? Pixies? The Shins? I like all of those, are they hipster because they are well-liked indie? I don't know.

Oh well in that case, none of the above qualify.

The idea is that the elitism of Music Banter drives people away from a lot of hipster bands. And, while some of the bands may be trash, there are a lot of genuinely good bands that have the hipster tag attached to them and thus people we renounce them. The point of this thread is to get people to reveal what bands they listen to that have this label attached to them.

Norg 06-10-2009 11:05 PM

i dont know what a hipster band is

i like Tokio Hotel but i dont know if there Super popular alot of people are turned off by them

i dont know is Incubus still cool i know legions of girls still like them

Farfisa 06-10-2009 11:05 PM

I feel bad for liking Animal Collective and Bon Iver. Oh, and also... Pitchfork gave "Camoufleur" a 9.6 but, I don't know of any hipsters that have even heard of Gastr Del Sol.

ps. they took the review of the site I guess, *sigh* it was from 1998 of course.

Neither Tokio Hotel or Incubus are considered hipster bands.
