Whats Your Favourite Lyrics Of A Song
Alrite, this is a thread where you can post your favourite lyrics from a particular song.
Lyrics in particular that move you, are special or just simple but do it for you. Please NO posting personal lyrics as I dont think this is allowed by the mods & dont want my thread to get hi-jacked! Alright. Heres some lyrics that I love: Dire Straits- Calling Elvis Calling Elvis Is anybody home? Calling Elvis I’m here all alone Did he leave the building Or can he come to the phone Calling Elvis I'm here all alone Well tell him I was calling Just to wish him well Let me leave my number Heartbreak Hotel Oh love me tender Baby don’t be cruel Return to sender Treat me like a fool This is possibly the best (or one of) set of lyrics Mark Knopfler has ever written; very clever merging references to Elvis & filling them in with his own. I suppose you could argue it could have been pretty easy for him with all the existing Elvis lyrics to work around but still it works for me. Heres another from possibly my favourite song of all time (or definitely one of my most listened to songs). I couldnt find a video for it on youtube so ive picked an accoustic cover that I think is really good & I dont usually dig the fanboy covers you get on youtube. Neil Young- I'm The Ocean I'm an accident I was driving way too fast Couldn't stop though So I let the moment last I'm for rollin' I'm for tossin' in my sleep It's not guilt though It's not the company I keep People my age They don't do the things I do They go somehwere While I run away with you I got my friends And I got my children too I got her love She's got my love too I can't hear you But I feel the things you say I can't see you But I see what's in my way Now I'm floatin' Cause I'm not tied to the ground Words I've spoken Seem to leave a hollow sound On the long plain See the rider in the night See the chieftain See the braves in cool moonlight Who will love them When they take another life Who will hold them When they tremble for the knife Voicemail numbers On an old computer screen Rows of lovers Parked forever in a dream Screaming sirens Echoing across the bay To the old boats From the city far away Homeless heroes Walk the streets of their hometown Rows of zeros On a field that's turning brown They play baseball They play football under lights They play card games And we watch them every night Need distraction Need romance and candlelight Need random violence Need entertainment tonight Need the evidence Want the testimony of Expert witnesses On the brutal crimes of love I was too tired To see the news when I got home Pulled the curtain Fell into bed alone Started dreaming Saw the rider once again In the doorway Where she stood and watched for him Watched for him I'm not present I'm a drug that makes you dream I'm an aerostar I'm a cutlass supreme In the wrong lane Trying to turn against the flow I'm the ocean I'm the giant undertow |

Heres another couple of songs from another one of my favourite artists of all time
Paul Weller- Time Passes I saw you today, or at least I think it was It's hard to say, we've all changed so much - Compelled to look, but I hid my face It's hard to trace - these feelings Gone so soon, the time I spent with you And like an old, old tune-keeps running through my head- I wanted to say, so many things But my mouth went dry - and one word & I'd cry. Slender bride, your beauty shines from you And forever more, I'll be on your side for sure - A light in your life, that always burns for you As time passes.... so quickly. The final stage, we've both reached some way As we board our trains to different stations And the parts we play, and the things we say, Words on the way - to discovery This is another great song from Mr Weller- although i think lyrically the songs on Wild Wood are better (Ill post them later sometime) I still think these are the two best songs of Stanley Road not to mention the title track itself. Paul Weller- Porcelain Gods Beware false prophets - take a stand! My fortune cookie cracked up in my hand, More advice to fill up your head More empty words from the living dead- Who seek to explain what can’t really be said- And how disappointed I was To turn out after all - Just a porcelain God - That shatters when it falls- Too much will kill you - too little ain’t enough You shout my name but I’ll call your bluff Most who see me - see me not for real We fake & fawn - play games ’til dawn But I could see what you can see And I hate too what you hate in me - And how disappointed I am To find me part of no plan - Just a porcelain God - That shatters when it falls Don’t lose control - I tell myself, Life can take many things away - Some people will try - and take it all They’ll pick off pieces as they watch you crawl And how disappointed I was To turn out after all - Just a porcelain God - That shatters when it falls- That shatters when it falls. |

You suffer..but why? Napalm Death-You Suffer.
If you want to get into it, you got to get out of it. Hawkwind-Utopia. Both short yet perfect I think and they can apply to a wide range of subjects and emotions.

I would need to hear the full songs of each before I could pass any proper judgement though. |

I don't play favorites, but here's one I dig:
Tomahawk - Cul de Sac The world is growin' old And preparin' for sleep But you and me are just not gettin' outta bed Wakin' up Sunbathing on the shores of a nightmare I wish you were here 'Cause they say We say And we say Eternity is all used up And our hell has frozen over But it ain't that cold It's warm enough Sunbathing on the shores of a nightmare I wish you were here 'Cause they say We say And we say That we're saved We're saved That we're saved |

Perfect lyrics for a perfect song. If I'm still on this forum in 5 years, I guarantee I'll still be showing this song off at every oppurtunity.
Showbiz Controlling my feelings for too long Controlling my feelings for too long Controlling my feelings for too long Controlling my feelings for too long Forcing our darkest souls to unfold And forcing our darkest souls to unfold Pushing us into self destruction Pushing us into self destruction And they make me Make me dream your dreams And they make me Make me scream your screams Trying to please you for too long Trying to please you for too long Visions of greed you wallow Rhythms of greed you wallow Visions of greed you wallow Rhythms of greed you wallow And they make me Make me dream your dreams And they make me Make me scream your screams Controlling my feelings for too long Controlling my feelings for too long And forcing my darkest souls to unfold And forcing my darkest souls to unfold And pushing us into self destruction And pushing us into self destruction And they make me Make me dream your dreams And they make me Make me scream your screams

i'm not big on understanding what songs actually mean, but it's pretty irritating when lyricists resort to recycled cliches and platitudinous phrases. especially in cases like this, where there's no clear direction of focus to the material.
