No direction or focus? The lyrics are clearly about being controlled and used, with the implied theme that it's got to stop.

Saying they're the most awful lyrics you've ever seen is just untrue.

EDIT: Basically, I know that they're simple. They aren't abstract in the least. THAT'S WHAT I LIKE ABOUT THEM!

Kraftwerk - The Hall of Mirrors

The young man stepped into the hall of mirrors
Where he discovered a reflection of himself
Even the greatest stars discover themselves in the looking glass
Even the greatest stars discover themselves in the looking glass

Sometimes he saw his real face
And sometimes a stranger at his place
Even the greatest stars find their face in the looking glass
Even the greatest stars find their face in the looking glass

He fell in love with the image of himself
and suddenly the picture was distorted
Even the greatest stars dislike themselves in the looking glass
Even the greatest stars dislike themselves in the looking glass

He made up the person he wanted to be
And changed into a new personality
Even the greatest stars change themselves in the looking glass
Even the greatest stars change themselves in the looking glass

The artist is living in the mirror
With the echoes of himself
Even the greatest stars live their lives in the looking glass
Even the greatest stars live their lives in the looking glass

Even the greatest stars fix their face in the looking glass
Even the greatest stars fix their face in the looking glass

Even the greatest stars live their lives in the looking glass
Even the greatest stars live their lives in the looking glass

Both short yet perfect I think and they can apply to a wide range of subjects and emotions.
On a similar note, I always loved the lyrics to PiL's "The Order of Death". Just two lines repeating over and over but I really like them. You can really take it as a kind of commentary on life:

This is what you want
This is what you get

Quote:
You walked around, thought yourself beautiful
Just too bad they stared, Just too bad they stared
Broke up your crown, called you unusuable
See how well you fared

Stole underground, To kick your heart around
Banished from above, banished from above
Forgot yourself, Your home and shot your health
Left it all for love

And on their lips
Delirious quips
Last seen with friends wishing them well

Delayed, seduced you listened for the truth
Just too bad they lied, just too bad they lied
O come around in form of future youth
Summoned from the sky
Hours - TV on the Radio

That's only half the song, but I don't think the second half is quite as absorbing. TV on the Radio are in general, brilliant lyricists.

Yeah, Frances the Mute. If you're looking to get into them I'd say either Deloused or Bedlam would be the best place to start.

That song is so damn good. I always link it with the film Hardware from 1990 as that's the first time I heard it.

The Morning Light - Brand,New,Friends

"She's got these brand new friends
I got a few new songs
Mostly new headaches
And reasons not to call"

A Skylit Drive - Eva The Carrier

The scream this in a deep devilish scream during a somewhat of a breakdown.

"Hey baby, I want you
I want you.
Hey baby, I want you
I want you alive."

These are only some of the lyrics from mr Neil Young which I think are excellent.
Theres a few different lines in the song which I really like so Ive just posted all the lyrics & highlighted the ones which I think stand out:
Sorry about the ****ty fanboy video: couldnt find one with the original recording, still a great song though. Skip to 0.45.

Long ago in the book of old,
Before the chapter where dreams unfold
A battle raged on the open page,
Love was a winner there overcoming hate
Like a little girl who couldn't wait.

Love and only love will endure
Hate is everything you think it is
Love and only love will break it down
Love and only love, will break it down
Break it down, break it down.

Tomorrow is a long long time if you're a memory
Trying to find peace of mind

Spirit come back to me,
Give me strength and set me free
Let me hear the magic in my heart.

Love and only love will endure
Hate is everything you think it is

Love and only love will break it down
Love and only love, will break it down
Break it down, break it down.

Long ago in the book of old,
Before the chapter where dreams unfold
A battle raged on the open page,
Love was a winner there overcoming hate
Like a little girl who couldn't wait.

Love and only love will endure
Hate is everything you think it is
Love and only love will break it down
Love and only love.
