I'm gonna have to say Elliott Smith's Angeles and King's Crossing are up there, as well as Okkervil River's Westfall.

Below are the lyrics of a song by Yusuf (formerly Cat Stevens) that moves me very much. I like the honesty and simplicity of the lyrics and the room he gives in them for interpretation (which may also just mean that the lyrics are somewhat vague). Although as an atheist I do not believe souls or gods exist (as described in his song), I relate to the sense of self and introspection he describes. I feel the song shows someone who has learned to be at peace with the journey of life, much of which we can't control but some of which we can, such as by changing our behavior when we regret past actions.

Quote:
The Wind -- by Yusuf (formerly Cat Stevens)

I listen to the wind
To the wind of my soul
Where I'll end up well I think,
Only God really knows
I've sat upon the setting sun
But never, never never never
I never wanted water once
No, never, never, never

I listen to my words but
They fall far below
I let my music take me where
My heart wants to go
I swam upon the devil's lake
But never, never never never
I'll never make the same mistake
No, never, never, never
And here Yusuf is singing "The Wind" on YouTube:

Default Smells Like Teen Spirit

Smells Like Teen Spirit
By: Nirvana

Load up on guns and bring your friends
It's fun to lose and to pretend
She's over bored and self assured
Oh no, I know a dirty word

Hello, hello, hello, how low? (x3)
Hello, hello, hello!

With the lights out, it's less dangerous
Here we are now, entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now, entertain us
A mulatto
An albino
A mosquito
My libido
Yay! (x3)

I'm worse at what I do best
And for this gift I feel blessed
Our little group has always been
And always will until the end

Hello, hello, hello, how low? (x3)
Hello, hello, hello!

With the lights out, it's less dangerous
Here we are now, entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now, entertain us
A mulatto
An albino
A mosquito
My libido
Yay! (x3)

And I forget just why I taste
Oh yeah, I guess it makes me smile
I found it hard, it's hard to find
Oh well, whatever, nevermind

Hello, hello, hello, how low? (x3)
Hello, hello, hello!

With the lights out, it's less dangerous
Here we are now, entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now, entertain us
A mulatto
An albino
A mosquito
My libido

A denial! (x9)

One of my favorite lyrics of all time can be read in my signature... its a little excerpt from a song by one of my favorite bands of all time, Augie March....

Hi, Scottsy,
I had never heard of Augie March, so I read the full lyrics and listened to "Owen's Lament," as I was curious what sort of song would appeal to someone who, like I, loves the word "scooch."

"Owen's Lament" is quite a sad song! A man who went off to war imagines his beloved moving on with her life and remembering him through children she has (even if they are not with him), yet eventually he takes the bullet (which served as his "engagement ring" with the woman he loved and had to leave) such that his corpse is returned home to her (or his mother...I wasn't sure).

I thought it was interesting (a paradox) that the man in the song wanted the woman he loved to just do a foxtrot with other men, and nothing more, whether they are "foxes" or not (cute line)...yet he also imagines her having a child with someone else and he feels as if he would still be the parent...as if his love for her means he would (wish to) share all her life experiences with her even if he couldn't be part of them due to his death.

I read online that many people like the poetry of Augie March songs and lyrics, which are very popular with Australians...even ones who live in Wisconsin, apparently!

Across the Universe by John Lennon [talking about the lyrics]

Words are flying out like
endless rain into a paper cup
They slither while they pass
They slip away across the universe
Pools of sorrow waves of joy
are drifting thorough my open mind
Possessing and caressing me

Jai guru deva om
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world

Images of broken light which
dance before me like a million eyes
That call me on and on across the universe
Thoughts meander like a
restless wind inside a letter box
they tumble blindly as
they make their way across the universe

Jai guru deva om
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world

Sounds of laughter shades of life
are ringing through my open ears
exciting and inviting me
Limitless undying love which
shines around me like a million suns
It calls me on and on across the universe

Jai guru deva om
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Jai guru deva
Jai guru deva

It's so peaceful, without any corniness or cheesiness. it's so ... fluid.

The Faint - Paranoiattack

The news has got me paranoid
Papers and the news reports
Casualties of every war
The anchor people keeping score
The weapons now are chemicals
In water and in air above
In circulating envelopes
In powder through the postal routes

The threat of a disease is here
We nipped it once without a cure
It took forever 'til it stopped
Through mandatory needle shots
They gave us all a little dose
To teach our bodies how to cope
Finally when we had it licked
Some terrorists are back with it

The propaganda's working now
I'm falling for it hook and reel
I'm stocking up on medicine
Buying tape to seal us off in

If you get to hear more of Sunset Studies, from which Owens Lament comes from, you'll hear numerous other abstract and curious references... honestly its one of the most beautiful musical and lyrical albums I have heard, and although it is epic in length (I think around 77 minutes for the whole album) You never tire of it because the songs just keep taking you to these evocative places and you find yourself considering numerous stories as the tracklisting flickers by...

And there is something of Ghostly theme running through it which I really love...
