Thank you!! |
well i just finished sidewinder's David Bowie compilation, and might i say, i was impressed. my favorite part of it all was the backing band and how they came on the forefront instead of just sitting there and backing Bowie the whole time.

I'm hoping to get that Skinny Puppy comp done for you tonight...there's a ton to go through, 11 studio albums and about 5 b-sides and singles albums. I'm familiar with it all but it's still challenging to pick 15 tracks. |

It's certainly great though and a couple of standout tracks too. It has had 2 listens and it will get a few more. Although they don't sound alike I guess if you like early Flaming Lips (as in their skewed take on pop) then you will like this. Cheers Urban. |

Here you go then and I guess the only track you have heard is the perennial 'Born Slippy'? Underworld are so much more than that. UNDERWORLD http://www.outlar.com/images/artists/Underworld1.jpg Tracklisting: 1. Momove 2. Beautiful Burnout 3. Sola Sistim 4. Best Mamgu Ever 5. Cups 6. Push Downstairs 7. Banstyle/Sappy's Curry 8. Stagger 9. Dark & Long Underworld |
Hey jackhammer, have you heard the Dark & Long EP? It's as long as an album and amazing. As is the Dirty Epic/Cowgirl single, which I'm surprised can still be called a single with 3 10+ minute mixes and 5 other tracks each at least 6 minutes long. Anyway you should check out both...nice long jams.

I probably shouldn't do this as I tend to put way, way too much time and effort into compilations but here goes!

khfreek made me a compilation for The Fall of Troy (see top of page 4).
Unfortunately I had trouble loading 3 of the songs into iTunes...for whatever reason they would not import no matter what I tried. So I only got to listen to 9 of the songs but it still provided a great overview of the band's sound. I'll play the other 3 songs in Windows Media Player one of these days. So on to the music. I was quite surprised when I first started playing the compilation. I had this pre-conceived idea that The Fall of Troy were on the harder side of the post-hardcore genre, with some progressive influence. So this appealed to me quite a bit. I was expecting some relatively hardcore or deep vocals, some screaming and yelling perhaps, something kind of spastic but melodic. Musically I think that was quite accurate. But the vocals turned out to be more like those of Cedric from The Mars Volta and Claudio from Coheed and Cambria...much higher than I had anticipated. In fact the singing style, not just the voice, was very similar to those two bands. As a whole, The Fall of Troy sounds like a rougher, less produced, I guess more garage version of those two bands. Having been a fan of The Mars Volta and Coheed and Cambria since 2002-2003, it's hard for me to really see this as a good thing. I still listen to TMV regularly and C&C occasionally, and respect both. A little bit of research revealed that The Fall of Troy has been around for this long also, so it would be unfair for me to call them copy-cats just because I wasn't aware of them at the time. Had I known about them back then, I probably would have really liked them as it was really those two bands that got me interested in progressive rock. And when I first get into a certain style I seek out similar-sounding bands. They would have fit the bill perfectly and in fact I may have liked them a bit more on a certain level for being more punk (rougher production, a bit more chaotic). But the fact is that I've been listening to TMV and C&C for 6-7 years now, and so a band that sounds that much like them doesn't quite wow me today. I think they are talented and I did enjoy the music. It could even grow on me with enough listens, maybe they could even replace C&C since I don't listen to them that much anymore and was disappointed in their last album. I will keep my eye on The Fall of Troy to see where they go from here, and maybe check out one of their full albums soon. It was just hard for me to not think of TMV and C&C while listening to them, which is really the only thing that limited my enjoyment. Thanks for the comp. |
For anyone that has not yet discovered the wonders of alt. country and Ryan Adams, I've made a compilation of his best songs on my favorite 4 albums for someone else so not to waste the upload here it is:
