Plagiarism
I don't know if I'm the first one who noticed this, but I figure its worth mentioning. Here is the single "Cut Your Hair" by the Pavement.

Here is Weezer's "Buddy Holly" YouTube - Weezer - Buddy Holly (Freakers disabled embedding other format) Wiki says it was recorded August-September 1993 and released May 10, 1994 IS IT JUST ME? |
Other than the fact they both go 'oooo' there's not much to go on there.
|
Do you even know what plagiarism means?
|
This has to be the greatest misuse of the word plagiarism since that one guy called Amnesiac a ripoff of The Division Bell.

Dang that is really close.
But you guys need to remember that we're talking about a form of music that's often limited to a select few 12 barre chords, the pentatonic scale and certain time signatures. Take that and throw in 60 years of rock music history and millions of rock bands in existance, each with their own discographies. Yeah, I think the odds are in that a lot of bands can just copy each other on accident. I swear some people are so ridiculous to cry "plagiarism" over singers who have naturally similar sounding voices, or guitarists with similar styles. It f*cking happens. It doesn't mean they directly copied anyone, when you have so many musicians throughout a certain period of time playing a certain kind of music with certain limitations, it just happens, it's not plagiarism, it just means that kind of music is very generic. The Weezer/Pavement comparison thing is just ridiculous and I can't believe (well actually I can) that this comes up often on the internet. This is a prime example of trying to discredit a mainstream band by saying they ripped off some less popular band, and this is more ridiculous because these bands sound nothing alike. Seriously. How further are we gonna take this? It's like you could just make up these lame accusations on the spot. I'll prove it. The White Stripes are an exact ripoff of Ram Jam. Spread the word. |
Pavement? Obscure?
|
Well by comparison to Weezer. It's a dumb comparison either way.
I know that Malkmus has said it himself that he considers Weezer to be a ripoff of Pavement. But then again this is a man who has built a great reputation for saying incredibly obnoxious and stupid statements about artists more talented than he is.... Which btw, is a hell of a lot of people. |
I swear the verse in Cut Your Hair is exactly the same as the chorous in Buddy Holly...
|
If anything, the video for Buddy Holly is a bit close to the video for In Bloom.. but I'm not being a whiney monkeyfighter!

^ Yes we all know about that. I still think Come as you Are blows away 80's.
The tunes are distincitive, they are definetely not identical. Everything with the exception of the guitar line sound totally different, and I wouldn't even say the guitar line is exactly the same. Besides that this "plagiarism" happens all the time, there are so many tunes out there that I think this thread is moot. And the song was released in 1991. |
I just can't get into Killing Joke, it's the vocals.
|
This isn't so blatant (it's probably more a case of vaguely similar-sounding songs than plagiarism), but it's the only one I could think of. If you listen closely you can hear that the same melody during the verses is sped up in the latter song;

Is a total rip off of... |

Buddy Holly doesn't sound close to Cut Your Hair to me.

Can't believe no one's posted this yet...
Or this... |
I'm too lazy to dig up videos right now but Warning by Green Day is totally a rip off of Picture Book by The Kinks.

Wow, they're both chromatic descending basslines. That's certainly not something that thousands of folk and rock musicians use all the time... Oh wait, it totally is. Generic chord progressions have very good odds of sounding like other generic chord progressions. Case in point. ^ Predates Stairway by a year. Hell even the vocal melody sounds similar. ^ This actually sounds more like Taurus than Stairway does. |
MIA a Theaf of The Clash
I say YES. I listened to there song Paper Airplane while I was driving in my car and I couldn't help but realize that it seems to close to comfort with the song "Straight to Hell" by The Clash. Well anyways this is what I think let me know if you think I'm right or wrong.

Nightmare by Crooked X. When I first played that riff on Rock Band it sounded like a blatant rip-off of Iron Maiden. I'll post vids later.
