Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to the Heaven
Year: 2000

Stunningly beautiful, is the most appropriate way to describe this album, absolutely stunning, it's as close to perfect as you can get. Astonishingly good, the main crime here is that they won't reform to make more material. Short description I know, but god it's hard to write about something that absolutely floors you, the best post-rock album ever. Listen to this when you're ready to be blown away.

3 Choice Tracks: There's four, you get the drill.

This was beautiful. A complete work. Thanks for the post. I am not the biggest fan of post-rock but this definately changed my opinion on the genre and the band. Where should i go next after this cd with GSYBE? I have quite a few other post-rock albums but mainly just the usual ones... e.g. takk, agaetis byjun, some mogwai stuff, explosions in the sky

Frankly, once you have the GY!BE albums post-rock becomes mostly boring and awful in comparison, so there's not that I can say apart from get more GY!BE.

John Coltrane - Blue Train
Year: 1957

Coltrane makes his third appearance on the list and finally as a band leader! This album is an incredible rollercoaster, with brilliant performances from the entire cast, not only that but Coltrane exerts incredible control over the players. It's all about the soloist, he makes sure the focus is always there, and very rarely has two leads playing to confuse the lineup. It makes for a lot more of a moving, powerful listen becuase of the sheer talent of the musicians. Kenny Drew's piano stands out here, as he lays down some blistering performances. There are also times of sheer serene beauty to be found, such as on I'm Old Fashioned. Probably one of the most consisten Jazz albums in terms of performance and direction. This is one to listen to when you're ready to be wowed by some mind-blowing jazz.

Bacamarte - Depois Do Fim
Year: 1983

Let me first say, this does not have an 80's sound at all. As far as I know it was recorded during the seventies but took a long time to be released. Probably one of the greatest progressive rock albums to be released in the 80's or all time for that matter. This is incredibly accessible if you can appreciate brazillian music and great vocals. The playing is so incredibly, incredibly tight, and I mean seriously, this is a cohesive group. There are no standout performances to list here, simply because I'd have to list every little thing. All parts play incredibly well and it's such a rewarding listen. You'll want to put this on again and again and again. This is one to listen to when you have time to put it on twice, becuase believe me, you'll want to.

Samla Mammas Manna - Måltid
Year: 1973

Get ready for some of the weirdest music you'll ever listen to. This mixes Zappa-Esque compositions with random freak outs and even a few magma style vocal shrieks. This wonderful avant-garde swedish band really has created one of the most interest albums of the 70's. That's not to say there's nothing normal and conventionally good about this. The whole album is compositionally strong and have a lot of great individual parts, including some of the finest guitar work I've ever heard. This is one to listen to when you're tired of all the regular avant-garde stuff that's out there, and that's saying something.

3 Choice Tracks: Dundrets Fröjder, Syster System, Minareten II

Guybrush 05-22-2009 03:28 AM

Yeeha :D Samla Mammas Manna are excellent and definetly deserve more mention in general!

Nice review, this is a good album. I work with a guy who keeps playing it just about every night at the moment. I do like it but TBH would rather listen to other saxophonists such as Stan Getz or Bud Shank.
Perhaps I dont appreciate John Coltrane as much as I should.
Other good albums by him (which i kind of prefer) are 'Giant Steps' (1960) & 'Interstellar Space' (1969).

Agitation Free - Malesch
Year: 1972

If you love krautrock you'll love this. One of the finer examples of the genre Agitation Free brings a far larger range of influences than most bands of the era. Having travelled through Greece, Egypt and Cyprus soaking in the local sounds, and it most certainly paid off. This album is incredibly interesting, most certainly one of the more accomplished albums of it's time. The thing that draws me to this album is that it never goes anywhere, it just sort of meanders along, and lets you just come for the ride. This is one to listen to if you want some new, interesting krautrock.

Eek, now I'm scared because I listen to a good amount of post-rock, and I don't want to stop liking it. Although, it could help me weed out the less interesting stuff and focus more of my attention on the better stuff. I'll proceed then. Now that I've talked myself into it. :D I got Lift Your Skinny Fists... from a friend the other day so I'll be playing it soon.

I also downloaded Samla Mammas Manna's Måltid in September last year but never took the time to listen to it (it's sitting in the backlog with many other albums). I have Klossa Knapitatet on CD and though it was enjoyable, pretty much as you described Måltid.

2nd is strong, but in my opinon not as interesting. It's very very well worth a download and listen though, even if it's a bit pretentious even for me!

Pearl Jam - Vitalogy
Year: 1994

What's this, experimentation? But you thought Pearl Jam were just some shitty Nirvana rip-off riding on Cobain's wave of popularity. Pearl Jam finally show some maturity and evolution as a band on their third effort. Both Ten and VS are brilliant albums, but Vitalogy is a masterpiece in it's own right. The overall shift in sound to a more sincere, realistic portrayal of who they are is incredibly refreshing. The new drummer does a great job and so does the rest of the band. This is one of the essential 90's mainstream albums, yet it's either dismissed because "it's Pearl Jam" or because "it's not Ten". Listen to this one if you're feeling just a bit angry and want a release on a degree a bit less than metal.

3 Choice Tracks: Nothingman, Better Man, Hey Foxymophandlemama, That's Me

Definately their best, although I hate ten, I agree with Curt Cobain who once sain that it's just, "Reheated arena rock". Vitalogy is odd and post-punky though, and includes my favorite Pearl Jam song, "Corduroy"

I also like the EP they made around the same time with Neil Young, "Merkinball" which includes the ill jam, "I Got ID"

Bathory - Blood Fire Death
Year: 1988

This is a landmark album when it comes to extreme metal, and for that alone it's well worth a listen. This album marked a turning point between quick, harsh and fast songs, and started shifting towards long, epic arrangements. It's a landmark in both Viking and Black metal and yet another shift in sound for Bathory. As a result of this album, and the follow up Hammerheart the underground extreme metal scene in Scandinavia would change forever. Not only that, but it's an incredibly great album, very interesting and very heavy, even by todays standards. You'll love the riffs and the stripped down raw production (even if it is good by Bathory's 80's standards). This is one to listen to if you're in the mood for an 80's album that gives a glimpse into the 90's future.

Wishbone Ash - Argus
Year: 1972

I'm amazed and appalled that this album wasn't included in the original 1001 list. But then again I'm sure it's far less important or groundbreaking than 50 cent. This is one of my all time favourite albums, everything about it is just so perfect. The dueling guitars, the massively tight rhythm section, everythign just works so well. On first listen this should just amaze you from the get go. The guitar work of Ted Turner and Andy Powell really shines on this album, not to mention the catchy vocal harmonies and complex arrangements. This is one to listen to if you're in the mood for some epic guitars.

Etron Fou Leloublan - Les Poumons Gonflés
Year: 1982

Utterly fucked up RIO/Avant-garde/free jazz french randomness. I'm sure behind the madness lies a carefully thought out masterpiece, and that's what makes this such an amazing listen. Not only is it catchy in a sick twisted way, but it also basically just captures the mood and lets you sneak a look into the weird and demented world of this band. Ever wonder what the english translation is? Why it's Mad shit, The White Wolf of course. This is one to listen to if you want to go one step weirder than Samla Mammas Manna.

Mahvishnu Orchestra - Birds of Fire
Year: 1973

Jazzy guitar driven fusion at it's absolute best. It even has a Miles Davis composition, so yeah, how can you lose! There's so much that can be said for this band, this is truly bringing jazz into a new age, and the fact that it didn't spawn a whole new lasting movement is such a massive shame. I had a bit of difficulty chosing between this and The Inner Mounting Flame. But I've always found that Birds of Fire was more driven and featured a much tighter band. This has massive crossover appeal so it's hard to see how anyone could not enjoy this. This is definitely one to listen to when you want to hear the shape of jazz to come in a more perfect world.

3 Choice Tracks: Birds of Fire, Celestial Terrestrial Commuters, One Word

Il Balletto Di Bronzo - Ys
Year: 1972

I'm sorry I can't hear you over the sound of how awesome this is. Imagine if ELP had the capacity to make captivating music. You know, with some awesome guitars, a truly great drummer, keyboardist coupled with great songwriting skills. This is basically what you get with this Album, a lot of people are quick to dismiss it as derivative, but I just don't hear it. Even now this sounds completely original and suprisingly fresh. It's safe to say this has aged better than a lot of it's contemporaries. This is one to listen to when you want to hear something really interesting.

Led Zeppelin - Presence
Year: 1976

At first this, along with Houses of the Holy were the two choices available to me due to my restrictions. On re-examination, this is probably the strongest Led Zeppelin album. Bonham and Jones are on top form here, the rhythm section is so amazingly tight. Page and Plant however, are in a world all on their own, Tea For One for example, Page goes from sonic assault to beautiful squeals and Plant finds a power in his voice that exemplifies his longing. Yes, you can hear he's tired at times here, but it just adds to the bluesy feel. I'm not even going to start mentioning Achilles Last Stand, we'll be here all day. This is Led Zeppelin stripped down, raw and without all the fannying aboutm, also two hard rock epics, I am in heaven. Listen to this when you want an honest, bluesy hard rock album.

3 Choice Tracks: Achilles Last Stand, Nobody's Fault But Mine, Tea For One

About Mahavishnu, I can see there's quality there and some of the songs are good (I also prefer birds to mounting flame), but listening to McLaughlin's picking gets a bit stressy for me. If you sit down and just listen to it, you can sort of imagine him standing on the table in front of you noodling with his guitar right up in your face.

Good call on Ys, I just sampled it a few days ago and it was better than I expected from slightly obscure italian prog offering from 1972. :D

Panzerpappa - Koralrevens Klagesang
Year: 2006

Norwegian group panzerpappa returns with this brilliant RIO/jazz-fusion prog masterpiece. With a diverse and brilliant range of influences which have been moulded here in to something completely unique there's a lot to cach onto here. There is a massive crossover appeal as well, none of these songs are too proggy, or too jazzy, they're just right to make it pallatable to pretty much everyone. Richard sinclair also guests on the brilliant Vintervake, everything about this is just cheery and fun. This is one to listen to when you're in the mood for a pick me up.

Hatfield and the North - The Rotters' Club
Year: 1975

Not exactly as rude as their first offering, but still lovably crude. Richard Sinclair makes his third appearance on the list on this jazzy, canterbury prog album. You'll love all the insanely quirky shorter songs, but the true masterpiece here is the 20 minute epic. The amazing jazzy improvisations and serene vocals just make this a joy to listen to. There's not all that much to say about this other than you really really have to get a hold of it. I swear you won't be dissapointed, this is a must have for canterbury fans. This is one to listen to when you want something a bit more jazzy than Caravan.

This fuzzy 60's throwback with added guitar and improved production is a brilliant display of the genre's capabilites. Änglagård - Hybris
Year: 1992

This reminds me a tiny bit of Samla Mammas Manna in the style of arrangments on certain pieces. But that could also be because they're both from that awful country that is Sweden. This lovely pleasant album is perhaps one of the finer examples of how newer prog can be beautiful and challenging. This has a very timeless feel to it, and it has aged very well in comparison to a lot of other early 90's albums. There's always something new to this as well so it just gets better and better with subsequent listens. This is one to listen to when you want to hear something that will always sound fresh.

Sleepy Sun - Embrace
Year: 2009

I'm using the main release date here. This dirty, fuzzy, heavy piece of modern psychedelic rock will be a great addition to pretty much anyone's collection. There's always something going on here and it just adds a lot to the listening experience. Unlike a lot of psychedelic stuff, you never find that the songs all sound the same. Instead this tries very hard to shake it up constantly. And the final song is just a brilliant little duet. This is definitely one to listen to when you want something that sounds fresh but well aged.

Renaissance shouldn't need much introduction here. This album will always have a nice special little place in my heart. While I'm typically a fan of Yardbirds leftovers this assortment never quite tickled my fancy. I find it too bland and reliant on a skill level that wasn't as high as they perceived it to be.

I'm sure you've been asked questions like these before but, how old are you and how do you find time to delve into so many relatively obscure artists from three and four decades prior?

It's not as skillfull as other prog rock acts, but it's serenely beautiful in it's own way imho.
