http://comusmusic.co.uk/img/COMUS_FU_COV.jpg Comus - First Utterance Year: 1971 Jangly, psychedelic and downright scary music makes this a must listen experience. Yes, it's my namesake Comus' first, and in my mind only, effort. The ability to make acoustic instrumentation sound so heavy is just amazing. The themes tackled are even more profound, violence and rape to name just two. It's an album that I've put off reviewing, and I can't see myself actually ever doing so, it has a certain grip on me and I can't really get past that to be able to properly talk about it. Everything is just perfect in my eyes, especially Drip Drip. However for such a strange album, there is a lot of beauty to be found, especially on the Herald which is the perfect juxtaposition to Drip Drip. Anyways, this is just an album to listen to, no matter what on earth you're doing it will work with this album, or at least you will make it work. 3 Choice Tracks: Diana, Drip Drip, The Bite |
Man, this is some undertaking. Great choices so far, I'm going to get my hands on 010.

The description leaves me optimistically curious but the album cover gives me the uneasy sensations I often feel in anticipation of some bad heart burn.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...oonmadness.jpg Camel - Moonmadness Year: 1976 The title of this album is so about the menstrual cycle, I don't care what you tell me. But yes. The album shows a slight deviation from the direction they took in The Snow Goose, and a more mature band than made Mirage, which almost made it on the list instead of this one. The whole album, like a lot of Camel's music is mostly incredibly relaxing with a nice spattering of something a bit harder and edgier to keep you on your guard. Overall it is indeed a masterpiece, it has everything you'd want, beauty, passion, atmosphere and some great guitar. This is definitely one to listen to late at night, before you go to sleep, just to set you off and make sure you have some nice, calm and interesting dreams. 3 Choice Tracks: Spirit of the Water, Air Born, Lunar Sea |

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...Turnstiles.jpg Billy Joel - Turnstiles Year: 1976 Pop perfection, in every sense of the word. Wikipedia calls it rock, but I'm not fooled, this is pop at it's finest and why shouldn't it be? Billy Joel is the undisputed vocal and piano master of the 70's, not like that utter hack Elton John. Anyways this album is just flawless. There's not even a second of filler and it really does show. Every time you put this album on it is pretty much guaranteed to sound fresh and packed with beauty and hooks. I don't understand why this album is so often overlooked for Piano Man or The Stranger, when both have significant flaws. So far this has been the album which has made it very difficult for me to pick just three tracks. I wanted to include every one of them when I listened back over it to ensure it was worthy, and as good as I remembered. Anyways this album is great anywhere, at a party, at work (I used to play it at work), when going to sleep, when just sitting at your computer chilling and posting, when you're in the bath etc etc etc. 3 Choice Tracks: Summer, Highland Falls, Prelude / Angry Young Man, James |
I forgot about Billy Joel, I'll have to give this a listen tonight

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...amVitalogy.jpg Pearl Jam - Vitalogy Year: 1994 What's this, experimentation? But you thought Pearl Jam were just some shitty Nirvana rip-off riding on Cobain's wave of popularity. Pearl Jam finally show some maturity and evolution as a band on their third effort. Both Ten and VS are brilliant albums, but Vitalogy is a masterpiece in it's own right. The overall shift in sound to a more sincere, realistic portrayal of who they are is incredibly refreshing. The new drummer does a great job and so does the rest of the band. This is one of the essential 90's mainstream albums, yet it's either dismissed because "it's Pearl Jam" or because "it's not Ten". Listen to this one if you're feeling just a bit angry and want a release on a degree a bit less than metal. 3 Choice Tracks: Nothingman, Better Man, Hey Foxymophandlemama, That's Me |
Album 983
http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov...69148h106n.jpg The Sonics - Boom Year: 1966 This is filthy, garage rock at it's best. It's dirty, it's heavy it's full of energy and a significant portion of the songs are covers. It makes you feel like, with little talent and a few instruments, you to can make a great album. Hailing from the fine state of Washington that also gave us our previous album it's this garage rock movement that eventually set the scene for grunge some 20 odd years later. This album makes for an incredible listen, if just to see how little garage rock has changed over the years. This album is one to listen to just before you get bathed, the dirt can be quickly disposed of and then you can enjoy your day with memories of this great music. 3 Choice Tracks: Cinderella, He's Waitin', Shot Down |
Nice little review of Vitalogy :) As you know, I'm listening to it right now and I very much agree with your description of it. Listening to it now, I think it might lack the accessible hits like Even Flow, Jeremy and Alive, but that doesn't mean there aren't songs just as strong as those and the whole album is enjoyable from start to finish.

The Sonics kick much garage ass.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...0px-Arntor.jpg Windir - Arntor Year: 1999 Sognametal! Well, it's really just black metal with a folk twinge. This is the first proper black metal album on the list and even then it's not quite there, but don't worry there's still time. This album is timeless, and absolutely brilliant. There's a reason the band has such a dedicated fanbase with significantly larger scrobbles per listener than pretty much any band, especially one with as long songs as they do have. This album features one of the most amazing tracks in black metal history. Saknet, 10 minutes long yet it feels like 2. This is an album you just never want to finish. Listen to it at any time, and when do you put it on again, and again and again. 3 Choice Tracks: Arntor, Ein Windir, Kong Hydnes Haug, Saknet That's another 10! Which means another compilation will come soon. |
Didn't notice the comp, wicked. I didn't realise thick as a brick was a piss-take until it came up in a documentary, just goes to show eh. Now that's an album you want to have on vinyl for obvious gatefold artwork/mock newspaper reasons

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...e_Me_Death.jpg Dead Kennedys - Give Me Convenience Or Give Me Death Year: 1987 Yes, it's a compilation album, but with 15/17 songs previously unreleased on Dead Kennedys albums I don't think it matters. Especially since a few compilations somehow made it onto the original list. Containing singles, B-sides and live recordings this is by far the most eclectic Dead Kennedys release, and it's by far the best. Starting off with the brilliant Police Truck it just gets better, with my favourite Dead Kennedys track Too Drunk To Fuck up next. There's a lot of social commentary (Night of the Living Rednecks) as well as general disdain for the music industry (Pull My Strings) and the general extreme energy that make Dead Kennedys the ultimate American punk band. This is one to just listen to, soak it up, albums as good as this don't come by often, even if Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables and Plastic Surgery Disasters do get very close. 3 Choice Tracks: Too Drunk To Fuck, Pull My Strings, Kinky Sex (Makes the World Go 'Round) |
Album 980
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...n_the_Edge.jpg Hawkwind - Warrior on the Edge of Time Year: 1975 Hawkwind almost venture into prog on this superb and satisfying release. The fact that this band has such mass appeal yet still never really made it truly "big" astounds me. There's just so much greatness in this and a lot of their albums. Sure Lemmy can't really play bass on their albums and they've had a revolving door policy regarding band members, but they've always managed to constantly put out great music for a long time now. Anyways, this is their proggies release although it never quite gets there, staying somewhat firmly in their space rock roots. There is a lot here to process in just a few listens so it's a definite grower, although you might be amazed immediately. Regardless, this is one to listen to if you just want to chill out and forget your troubles. 3 Choice Tracks: Assault & Battery Part I, Magnu, Spiral Galaxy 28948 |
The cover art alone kind has me hooked a little, don't know why...might have to give this one a try

I like it.
Album 979 http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...low_Yellow.jpg Donovan - Mellow Yellow Year: 1967 Yes, with a title song about a vibrator and nine other songs that just pleasantly meander without really going anywhere you have to ask, why did this make the list? Well, it's firstly Donovan's most consitent effort, and it's also quite brilliant. It's amazing that someone can make music with such lovely soft, mellow soundscapes and yet only really be acclaimed by the hipsters of the world. Where is the pop appreciation? This is more than just a pleasant experience, it is a really solid album that makes a lot of good points, and it is a musical experience that you really would be better off having heard. Listen to it while toking up or just wanting to mellow out. 3 Choice Tracks: Mellow Yellow, Bleak City Woman, Hampstead Incident |
Very nice thread, Comus. Some stuff I already like and some stuff I'll need to check out. You inspired me to bring Camel's Moonmadness to work today.
|
Oh man.... I thought I was the only person in the world who likes Donovan.
Looked up some of Donovan's lyrics the other day to try to find some rhyme or reason to this madness, but knowing what the lyrics are just confused me more. E-lec-tri-cal ba-na-na...... Wonderful review by the way. |

Album 978 http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...gBudPowell.jpg Bud Powell - The Amazing Bud Powell Year: 1952 Ignore the CD re-issues with all the 12 extra tracks which are basically all unnecessary extra takes. This is all about the 8 song, 1952 original release. And boy is it a wonderful release indeed. I love me some jazz, a lot of it really speaks to me, and while it's nice mixed with prog, it's so much more rewarding by itself with a nice glass of wine. This really is great, and way back then it showed a glimpse of the future of jazz. Every little bit here is just perfectly groovy, and it works so well. Bud's piano playing is absolutely masterful and it's a joy to listen to him work his stuff. As mentioned this is definitely one to listen to with a nice sofisticated drink and the company of good friends. 3 Choice Tracks: Un Poco Loco, Wail, It Could Happen To You |
Album 977
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...0px-Agadez.jpg The Mars Volta - Bedlam In Goliath Year: 2008 The Mars Volta finally mature enough to make a real, tight and cohesive effort. This is like nothing really done before, thoroughly progressive and without real flaws. I enjoy this album more than any other release of the past few years, and that says quite a bit considering the amount of good albums released recently in the underground scenes. While this is far from that, and very much a mainstream album it certainly has a sense of inaccessibility about it. That being said it should be very attractive to prog fans, the running themes, the flow and the actual progression is all there to make it a great prog album. To call this a masterpiece might be jumping the gun a bit, give it a few years to stew and we might be hailing this as the masterpiece of 2008. This is one to listen to and appreciate alone at first, to really get you going it is best to listen with as few distractions as possible. 3 Choice Tracks: Ilyena, Goliath, Conjugal Burns |
Even as a TMV fan I could never fully appreciate Bedlam. Oh well, I'm glad you could.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...rayAndPink.jpg Caravan - In the Land of Grey and Pink Year: 1971 Be prepared for something absolutely wonderful, this album is just so british. It's marvelous, the often crude lyricism complete with wonderful instrumental passages makes this a lovely album to listen to and enjoy. It was difficult to chose what Caravan album to put on but this one edges out the competition, if only just. It has a lovely mix of pop sound combined with a powerful canterburyfeeling making it incredibly enjoyable. Let this album just immerse you in the unique caravan sound, and just chill. 3 Choice Tracks: In the Land of Grey and Pink, Winter Wine, Nine Feet Underground |
Good call on In the Land of Grey and Pink .. One of my favourite albums these days :)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...0px-Dslogr.jpg Dire Straits - Love Over Gold Year: 1982 This album divides Dire Straits fans, firstly there are no instant hits like Sultans of Swing and Walk of Life however, there is something far more consistent about this album. The whole flow, the ambience everything works to their favour. Dire Straits craft a lovely produced album and make it sound very good. It's not prog by any means, but it has hints of it, a little bit of extra spice. The 14 minute epic Telegraph Road is probably one of the Straits strongest ever efforts. The soloing is strong, and so are Knopflers vocals, good consistent effort. This is one to listen to while driving or doing anything else, once you get familiar with it of course. 3 Choice Tracks: Love Over Gold, It Never Rains, Telegraph Road |

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...albumcover.jpg Can - Ege Bamyasi Year: 1972 This is some great krautrock, well it's more pop than anything, but it's by far the most focused effort from Can. This is a great relaxing effort, it's lush soundscapes and sweeping motions let the album lead you through from start to finish. It's definitely a very interesting album, there's always something new to find, and it's always satisfying when you do find something new. Listen to it when you want to chill out, or just reflect. 3 Choice Tracks: Sing Swan Song, Soup, Spoon |

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi..._-_Strikes.jpg Blackfoot - Strikes Year: 1979 Delicious southern rock album here with all the makings of a classic, had it only been released earlier it would probably now enjoy classic status. From the hard rocking start to the epic Highway Song this has everything you'd ever want in a rock album. Straight to the point with great hooks, riffs, solos and attitude. But by all means I don't feel that it sounds in anyway dated, it has a very timeless feel to it, and that's always a massive bonus. This is one to just rock out to. 3 Choice Tracks: Road Fever, Pay My Dues, Highway Song |

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...eldssanger.jpg Ulver - Kveldssanger Year: 1995 Probably the best acoustic album you've never heard, at the time a rather big black metal band in the norwegian scene Garm and his bandmates showed their first glimpse of experimentation. In a scene known for it's harshness Ulver brought out this beautiful acoustic masterpiece. Garms overdubbed voice adds to the effect, almost creating a choir like experience. Even more alluring is the subtly imperfect playing of the instruments which adds more than it detracts. This was a bold statement from a band who only did one more black metal album before shifting direction (and were admittedly utter rubbish until shadows of the sun). Let this be your gateway into the wonderful world of Ulver and their four great albums. This is one, as suggested by the title, to listen to at night, while you get ready to sleep, that's what I'm doing! 3 Choice Tracks: Østenfor Sol og Vestenfor Maane, A Capella (Sielens Sang), Ulvsblakk Compilation will come after my exam tomorrow, unless I can't sleep. |

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...konaFriend.jpg Budgie - Never Turn Your Back On A Friend Year: 1973 Sometimes fast, sometimes heavy, always brilliant in the guitar and vocals department this power trio pulls of something quite spectacular here. It rocks hard straight from the get-go and Breadfan is an absolutely brilliant album opener. The softer songs may contain a bit of cheese but for the time that was to be expected. This sounds so amazingly ahead of it's time, and no wonder considering the speed of the guitars. The album end with the ten minute epic Parents which seems to last for about 1 minute, you just want to to keep playing forever, but that's what the repeat button is for. This is one to just rock out to, turn up to 11 and enjoy. 3 Choice Tracks: Breadfan, In The Grip of a Tyrefitter's Hand, Parents |
