Interpol- Turn on the Bright Lights
Obstacle 1

Feed your eyes this^^

Turn on the Bright Lights is an album I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of, its also one of the few I can listen straight through without skipping any tracks. Built on a post punk sound similar to Joy Division (especially in the vocals) with mainly simple dueling guitars, throbbing bass, and a snare heavy mix. From the reverbing guitars on the very first track you know that this will be an album you’ll want to listen to again. Though this albums sound isn’t really anything new or original it still manages to pull it off so damn well.
The lyrics are pretty vague and almost abstract not giving a clear explanation of what is going on in the songs. Some say that there are specific meaning told through metaphors and symbolism to songs such as Stella was a Diver and She was Always Down (which is believed to be about a prostitute) “At the bottom of the ocean she dwells, from crevices caressed by fingers and fat blue serpent swells”. But the lyrics in most of the songs could be the best part of the tracks themselves, I’ll never forget how amazed I was the first time I heard the closing track Leif Erickson, Paul’s word were so beautiful and touching yet at the sometime so detached with lines like “Her rabid glow is like braille to the night” or “I'll bring you when my lifeboat sails through the night that is supposing you don't sleep tonight”. If Leif Erickson isn’t my favorite track then PDA surely is with its pounding drums and dueling guitars, and the guitar solo/outro, it is defiantly something that needs to be heard. Ive heard that it could be about date rape, and it seems plausible with lines like “But you're so cute when you're frustrated, dear, yeah, you're so cute when you're sedated, oh dear” or “You are a past dinner, the last winner, I'm raping all around me until the last drop is behind you”. But regardless of what its about its still a ****ing great track. Though the first time I heard this album I liked it but not nearly as much as I do now. It wasn’t until I played PDA on Rock Band 2 I thought “wow this is a really great song, I need to listen to that album again” and now its one of my favorite albums ever. Its post punk with catchy chorus’s what’s not to love? Also I dare you not like a band that dresses so well.

PDA (though missing the guitar outro)

^^Feed your ears this

Leif Erikson

Feed your heart this^^

Nice choice. I adore this album.

Bulldog and I saw Interpol on the NME awards tour in 2003, they were the best group on the bill and i was on their fan forum for a while... can't be bothered with the other albums but good call on that day-byoo

edit: good write-ups on Dr. Octagon and Chester French too, the latter are too good for words. I hope people are paying attention

Love that Angus & Julia Stone album. You should check out The Ecstasy Of Saint Theresa and Emilie Simon some time.

Sorry about the absence, everyone. I've been out doing real life stuff (weird, I know). I have a job interview today so everyone wish me luck! I'll try to get something up tonight.

Via Coma

A few weeks ago I went to a show at a small venue to see my cousin’s friend’s brother’s wife’s uncle’s nephew’s band play their first gig, and after being somewhat impressed by their 14-year-old grasp on music, we hung around to watch another (somewhat) local band play their set. They blew my mind! They have a very sophisticated and unique sound, and the vocalist is goose-bump inducing amazing. Who is this amazing new talent, you ask? They’re called Via Coma and they’re an Experimental/Indie/Rock band based out of Walnut Creek, California.

After raiding their merch stand, I talked to a few of the bands members letting them know how much I liked their work and they invited me to a show they were playing the following weekend. I kept contact with the band members through the week, until the following Friday night I traveled the two hours to Livermore with a cake that I baked for them (chocolate, with vanilla icing and their logo drawn on the top), my new green “I AM VIA COMA” t-shirt, and high expectations. They did not let me down.

Upon arrival I was swarmed with hugs and cheers and countless words of appreciation. I was allowed to go with them to the backstage area where we enjoyed the delicious cake together and got to know one another. But this isn’t about me and my relationships with hot up-and-coming band members. This is me letting you guys in on a great thing, for which you’ll undoubtedly thank me later.

The only catch is that because they’re a very new band (they’ve been together about a year) I don’t have a download available. I do own their newly released EP, Bridges, but I can't get mediafire to work without freezing my computer right now, so I apologize. Anyways, I give it three years (at the most) until you’re all playing their tracks relentlessly on your iPod. But for now, you’re all just going to have to go through the agonizing process of clicking the link to their MySpace page. You won’t be sorry, and if you are, well… fuck you.
