I voted for Stone Temple Pilots, the main reason - their drummer, Eric Kretz, I love the way he plays (I'm not saying he's better then David Krusen or other PJ drummers) I also like the drummer Matt Cameron (my favorite Seatle Grunge band was Soundgarden - to quote Eddie Veder "can't find a better band")
I love Ten by Pearl Jam, but not into them as one of my favorite bands but still I am amazed by their talent. I saw a something on VH1classics (Ten revisited) and Jeff Ament was dressed like Richard Simmons with combat boots and a rastafarian hat, I just thouhgt it was strange he wasn't wearing flannel - I thought it was a prerequisite for a Seatle band. The band broke up a few years ago and Scott Weiland formed a super group, Velvet Revolver, with Slash, etc. They got together again and are putting an album together to be released next year. |

pearl jam may have spawned fully formed from the flowing neck wound in the dying dinosaur of classic rock but at least they never presented themselves as anything but that, they never had to try, they just were.
STP on the other hand tried, a lot. 'core' was alright... if you found 'badmotorfinger' to be too aggressive. 'purple' was good too if you needed a change from 'in utero'. 'tiny music...' was the first disc they did that sounded like its own thing and it was good. 'no. 4' went back to 'core' only this time around it was for anyone who still wanted to listen to 'superunknown' 5 years later. 'shangri la-di-da' is an appropriately horrible name for a horrible album. hell i even own a copy of 'talk show' either way PJ wins for me by a ridiculous margin. |

I've never been a bit STP fan. I've never really found them to be all that exciting.
Pearl Jam is a really solid band though. I've got some of their stuff and I enjoy it. I'm not overly crazy about them though.

I still don't like the way Eddie Vedder sings and Pearl Jam are at best mediocre. STP has mediocre albums as a whole but when they hit their stride, they make great material. Behold.

STP by all means, the Stone Temple Pilots had changed their style and sound by the time they released singles like Sour Girl, when compared to their debut album Core.
I like Pearl Jam also, but not as well as I do STP. Scott Weiland is a more versatile and talented artist than Vedder, in my opinion. |

Not that I'm a huge listener of either, but my Dad would listen to a good amount of both bands while I was growing up. Always preferred Pearl Jam. When I was really young I remember hearing Jeremy and loving it. And I remember a few of us listening to evenflow and trying to figure out what he was saiyng lol.
Drawing pictures.. of mountains TOOOPS.. wiiiiith him on top. My old step brother was a STP fan but i never really liked them all that much. |

Scott Weiland actually can be a damn good songwriter when he wants to be, 12 Bar Blues is proof of that. Probably his most inventive lyrics and music he's ever written are on on that album, shame it gets such little praise. It also sounds like it's the most emotionally involved he's ever been with a project.
Yeah, I remember never understanding why everyone was saying that "Plush" sounded like a Pearl Jam-rip. I think it's more in the music though, Scott sounds more as if he's trying to ape Jim Morrision. |
