Back when I was 16 I use to be a huge SP fan and I was also aware of Billy Corgan's monstrous ego. Whenever I listened to them I had this little doubt in the back of my mind, a little guilty doubt and anger that I'm worshiping this man even though he's a huge douche. One of the things that I like about listening almost exclusively to underground music is that the artists are too small to really have gotten that ego boost, or if they do and are douche bags the media doesn't ever really talk about it so I'm left blissfully ignorant, which I can live with.
Well since he wasn't in Mayhem that seems a little odd.

Actually, he played bass on at least one Mayhem album, to my knowledge, and Aarseth played guitar on that same album. I wouldn't want to listen to Mayhem anyways, because 1. I don't like black metal, and 2. they're all sick, sick people.

Bootlegs anyone?

IMO, if they can make good music, i don't mind if they're just A-Holes.
If your not living with them who cares.

I don't particularly care, as long as they're making good music then what difference does it make?

Likewise.

Sometimes it even pays off. Take the song Hooker With A Penis by Tool. It was written about a fan who accused them of selling out. They wrote the song about him and now the kid is immortalized.

That doesn't really go along perfectly with what we're talking about, but it leads me to my next string of useless words:

I saw this video of a band, can't remember who, who were playing a concert and one of the band members royally tore the ass out of some kid in the audience who threw something on the stage.
Kid got kicked out, but I bet he felt like it was worth it.

I generally don't care about their personality, but it's always kind of a small, added bonus if they happen to be really awesome in addition to making badass, brilliant music.

Truth ^.

Take Daniel Johnston for example, he has such enigmatic & unique personality, I imagine it would be a bit difficult to fully absorb his music without knowing anything about his mentalities.

Agreed.

On the whole I don't give it a second thought. The personality factor's never stopped me listening to the music of Elvis Costello, Mark E. Smith, John Lydon, Paul McCartney and so on.

And it's not some moral standpoint that makes me hate Skrewdriver and GG Allin - I really do find their music to be pretty damn lame, regardless of characters behind them.

My attitude is as long as an artist makes great music and I don't have to personally deal with them, then they can be the biggest ****s in the world. I agree with Bulldog. I'm a big Elvis Costello fan despite his racial remarks which still bother me. The work he did with The Attractions is my favorite period and there's some great music I can't turn my back on.

One of the downsides of my job as a limo driver is that I sometimes meet celebs, artists or pro athletes and alot of them turn out to be ****s. It really sucks when it's someone you've looked up to. Fortunately Ive only met a couple of my idols so far and maybe only one was kind of a ****.
