I don't think there's any doubt that both of these bands suck; Nickelback have an outstanding reputation of being horrible. Conversely, I actually think that they've become the metaphorical punching bag for people to beat up on every time they talk about horrible music that's out there dominating radio frequencies.
Personally, I think they just came at the wrong time -- when post-grunge had already exhausted itself as anything remotely interesting. They're no worse than the slew of s
hite PG bands that came before: Local H, Marcy Playground, Silverchair, etc.
