Well I'm glad you enjoyed Punky Bruster Terrible, it's one of the rare CD's that I actually own. If you liked that one then I suggest Ziltoid The Omniscient by Devin Townsend. Very nerdy and satirical look at Space Invader movies from the '50's and '60's.

Emilie Autumn - Opheliac (2006) I got this one from my homey FaSho, and I apologise to him in advance... I don't want to sugarcoat it because that would be bullsh*tting: apart from a few saving graces I pretty much hated this album. Strong words, so let me explain. Emilie Autumn uses her obvious classical training to peddle a strange and initially intriguing mix of industrial beats, baroque instrumentation, gothic cabaret stylings (see above) and angsty whining. And here we come to my main bone to pick with Miss Autumn, she clearly knows the ropes and on a couple of tracks where the cringe-worthy lyrics and Trent Reznor-esque vocal distortion don't overwhelm it, she has a great voice (the title track in particular)... However her musical expertise are used in a manner not at all compatible with my tastes. It's all as cynically contrived as you'd expect any music defined by it's adolescent malcontent yet made by a 29-year-old to be; with tracks like 'the Art of Suicide' and 'Misery Loves Company'... Unfortunately at my age I just can't take it remotely seriously. In fact it takes me back to a magical time, a time before anybody had heard the word 'emo' and goths were the target of people's ire with their excessive make up, all-black wardrobe, angst-ridden music scenes and general self-indulgence. In that sense at least it was quite nostalgic and at least goths, as a youth tribe, had a proud musical heritage and were a bit less vain... right? But that's what this album brought me back to, and despite their being the occasional glimmer of hope for it musically, everything else just made my toes curl. This is not a slight on FaSho who is a very cool dude and not a goth, with an even cooler music collection for someone his age (when I was that young I think all I had were a couple of pop hits cassettes) - I am just being annoyingly honest about with my opinion of this one. Sawwy! Two bands I am not an expert on but would recommend in place of this - Nine Inch Nails and Dresden Dolls, Emilie Autumn seems to be loving them. |

Fruitonica sent me the Crystal Antlers EP which I very much enjoyed. It's definitely my kind of music, using psychadelic effects and less than conventional instrumentation. I will definitley be listening to this again, you couldn't have picked a better album.

Coheed & Cambria - The Second Stage Turbine Blade From - gunnels Gunnels let me pick an album for him to send me from his last.fm list, and this is what I chose. I've always been somewhat interested in C&C due to them having the rather unique possession of being rather proggy in their playing while still being fairly high profile and well-known to more mainstream listeners, and this album (which is their debut I think) is pretty awesome. It flows well, and for a band rooted in emo/metal they're rather creative in how they get a groove going. I'm really enjoying it, so thanks gunnels!!!

Vetiver - Thing Of The Past (2008) - Sent by Mannny I wasn't really sure what to make of this at first. I have always been a bit picky when it comes to folk music and a lot of it doesn't really appeal to me , the last thing I wanted to hear was some acoustic singer songwriter album as 99.9% of this genre bores me to tears. Whilst unzipping the album I did a double take. Did I really just see Hawkwind's Hurry On Sundown flash past just then. It turns out it was , and after a bit of research discover that the whole album is made up of cover versions. Although only the Hawkwind cover was a song I had heard before. So naturally I skip straight to that song. And it's wonderful. Totally faithful to the original but with a bigger sound that really works. If I have one minor criticism of it I would have liked the vocals to be a bit stronger. In the original the vocals are buried in the mix but they're still quite clear. I just felt in this version they just seemed a bit too buried and a bit too subdued. Now all I want to know from Mannny was if he sent me this becuase of that song or was it just a coincidence. I don't know who performed the rest of the originals on the album and I didn't want to find out just so that I could take each song on it's own merits. I also liked the albums opening track 'Houses' which is just oozing in laid back Exile On Main Street style swagger. The next couple of songs are straight up country ,which while not exactly blowing me away still managed to hold my interest. The only part of the album I had trouble with was with the 3 slower songs in the middle of the album. I would have liked something a bit more uptempo to pick things up a bit but eventually things do just that with Hurry On Sundown & The Swimming Song. Then we get some more bluesy stuff with 'Blue Driver' & 'Standin' but then after that sadly the band end the album on one of my biggest pet hates ... a long slow ballad. I just cannot stand when bands put a song such as this as the final song. I want to be blown out of the water by the last song to make me go listen to the album again , not want the song to end because i'm getting bored. I find for me I need time to like slower songs and they need to grow on me and as a first listen they didn't really do a lot for me. But having said that there wasn't a track on this album I openly disliked. At best this album has plenty of balls & swagger to it , at worst it's background music. In that sense to me this album is a perfect Sunday morning album. I can't see me singing the praises of this band or rushing to find other stuff by them but I could easily see me coming back to this album in the future. Rating 6.5/10
