OK, I’d like to begin by saying a massive thank you to nonsubmissivewife for sending me this – I thoroughly enjoyed the album and I think it was an excellent choice!
Rival Sons – Before The Fire (2010) This is a cracking album, I played it twice before writing this review. With its catchy, punching and intense riffs, the excellent clear vocals and the fine crafting of song structures, I could best sum them up by describing them as similar to the John Spencer Blues Explosion with a different edge. There’s definitely the harsh, throbbing demeanour, but they definitely feel the blues, with some elegant syncopated structure and very emotional pieces that I loved immediately. I’ll briefly point out some highlights: Tell Me Something: Really good opening track – riff is instantly attention grabbing and the has some unpredictable twists. I think I’ve said enough on that one! Salami Scale: 9/10 Angel - This song has a confusing yet engaging opening intro similar to “Misty Mountain Hop” – indeed there are some aspects of this song that are quite reminiscent of Led Zeppelin, but don’t let that put you off! Also has one of the best choruses on the album, very good song altogether! Salami Scale:9/10 On My Way – This is the most bluesy track. The refrain is quite destitute, the song flows quite beautifully and the vocal work is very impressive for the chorus. Very good song indeed! Salami Scale: 9/10 I Want More: This is it – my personal favourite! Of all the new songs I’ve heard this year this one’s got the best riff by a long way. It builds up energetically to a really intense chorus. You can really taste the anger and frustration, there is the sense of menace that their rawness creates so well! Salami Scale: 10/10 There’s not really much else to say, because it’s that good as an album any prolonged praise would be a little tedious. I cannot find any negative words for it. It flows excellently, the atmospheres vary continuously, nothing is predictable and the album is a hugely enjoyable experience. Massive thank you to nonsubmissivewife, I knew I’d be in for a good surprise when I saw I’d get you as a partner, and you’ve clearly had a good look through my library and given me an album you knew I’d love! If this review looks a little too complimentary, it is so because she has found an album which really fits into my taste intimately and will certainly be a permanent addition to my iPod. Album rating overall: ☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺ (10/10) Thanks! |

Electrophonic Tonic was kind enough to send me this.
Techno Animal - The Brotherhood of the Bomb (2001) I'm assuming he sent this to me because I enjoy the music of Dalek, and this outfit is definitely very reminiscent, even feature emcee dalek on the last song. Techno Animal is one of the many collaborative projects involving British musician Justin Broadrick, who I honestly don't know much about. I've enjoyed the music of Godflesh, Jesu, and The Blood of Heroes, but that man's discography is all over the place that I just haven't had the time or energy to further explore his deeper cuts. Luckily, Techno Animal provides some more motivation that will definitely have me examining him on a deeper level, even if I'm still a little undecided on the actual album. I enjoy hip hop and I also enjoy layered noisy music and the album definitely delivers on both parts. There's enough good beats on here to grab my attention, and the few emcees that show up really help make each song they're on feel more special. That said though, I do feel there was a little bit of a gap in the middle of the album, really only helped by the 6th or 7th track that brought the album back to the forefront of my attention. That's both a good and a bad thing, I'm always on the lookout for something I can listen to while doing other things that demand my attention, but sometimes I just want to focus my attention on the music and I find myself looking for something to else to do while I listen to it. It's a tough rope to walk, but I think The Brotherhood of the Bomb is one of the closest ones that finds the middle ground. It's also a great album for the car, and I can guarantee it won't be coming out of it any time soon. Overall, I enjoyed the album, a few flaws here and there that keep it from being an amazing experience, but great musical experiences are always awesome, especially when they kickstart an interest in a musician I've always been on the fence about. |

I don't know how long it is until the next round, but may I join in on the fun at the start of the next round?

I was paired with Bob and we mutually decided we would link one another to albums out with our usual genre preferences.
Hence, I was sent the album Neurosis - A Sun That Never Starts I have not listened to much post metal, and if this album is an indication of the genre, I don't see myself listening to much more in the foreseeable future. The band is obviously comprised of talented musicians as there are great elements of progression on this record, but this is contrasted with the confusing use of erratic, random notes and chords which only detract from the sound. As do the vocals which feel completely out of place throughout the album, the singers voice never seems to be in synchronisation with any of the instrumental parts. His rough generic metal voice has no purpose on this record other than to add to the unfathomable mess. I somewhat recall him repeating the phrase 'Its time' on an ending track and it may have been wishful thinking to perhaps interpret this is an indication it was time for the album to end. I really did try and like this album. But, any more than the two play through's I endured would surely serve only as a mild sedative. There was an attempt to create an atmospheric, intense record here. However the only atmosphere it served was to recreate that of a waiting room, as I found myself exhaling and rolling my eyes waiting on something to happen, ultimately letting time slowly pass. I guess what I'm trying to get at, is that this album is chronically boring. There are flashes of brilliance here and there, when you think things may be about to pick up but in the end there is no climax, it just sort of goes on at the same distinctly average rate. On a positive note, there are some truly great moments of musicianship, mainly coming from the lead guitar and drumming. However, when they come together, they don't compliment each other and almost seem to be jostling for position. The album highlight is the 13 minute long 'Falling Unknown' which showcases what this band is capable of when it takes time to build upon its waiting room atmosphere and try to actually go somewhere with the music. This track also happens to more or less neglect the vocalist. A decision that should have been implemented throughout the albums entirety. Perhaps its just me, and Neurosis's record is a great showcase of what is a truly gripping genre. If that is the case, I'd rather remain ignorant and happy listening to other pieces of music which aren't the equivalent of hearing Eeyore of Winnie The Pooh reading the phone book. |

i have started and had to delete my review twice now
sorry i mainly listen to music when driving so its hard to take notes on what i think of it...and well my brain is not quite what it used to be as far as memory goes i will say this as a quick note a) i'm sorry you disliked the Neurosis album and honestly i blame myself a bit....i should have thought out my choice for you a bit better....had you had someone like Pete i'm sure he would have sent you something amazing in the genre....i apologize i feel like i kind of copped out a bit with your selection b) a quick review of what Mankycaaant sent me (a better one when i have time ) i had quite the opposite reaction....i love this album.....its an amazing blend of great indie pop music and an almost jarring math rock album....except somehow they managed to leave out the jarring part and make it much more fluid....seriously i love everything about this album and have already got their other album.....i'll write a more thorough review soon....thanks manckycaant....i love this album! |
