Ilya - Poise Is The Greater Architect (2002) nonsubmissivewife was kind enough to send me this eclectic blend of trip-hop, post rock, and shoegaze from San Diego of all places. The album has some strong moments, but some of the songs definitely feel stronger than others. What I liked about the album is that they didn't try to merge all the genres into one jumbled mess, however at times I wish they had. The changing sounds makes it incredibly hard to get bored, which is always a plus, but at times the album did feel a little directionless. Overall though I enjoyed the album, I'll definitely check out their follow-up album Leaving Sans-Souci and will probably use a song or two off Poise is the Greater Architect for a playlist in the future. Thanks for the album NSW. |

The Jet Age Of Tomorrow - Voyager
Unrelenting sent me this futuristic Hip-Hop/Electronic album to listen to. It is interesting to note that I only learnt that JAT were part of the OFWGKTA collective after I listened to the album and checked my last.fm to see if I had heard them before as one song sounded familiar. It turns out I had, and it was on the 12 Odd Future Songs compilation ("But She's Not My Lover"). Anyway, I really liked the album, and I am glad that I didn't learn they were OFWGKTA until after because I am usually tainted against their music because of previous releases I really didn't like. I don't think the album is mind blowing or anything, but it seems genuine in its lyrics and the production is cool and not completely generic. I especially liked the song "Can I Hold Your Hand" because of the strange vocals and Daft Punk sounding style. So yeah, overall, really good album, one of my favourite Odd Future releases and I am looking forward to hearing what else they have put out. Cheers for the album, I hope you enjoy yours

TomClancy11 sent me Streetcleaner by Godflesh. I've been a fan of industrial and industrial metal for some time now, so I knew a little about this band, but never really got around to listening to them. When it comes to music, I have a kind of "**** the classics" kind of attitude, feeling that I don't need to hear the "pioneers" to properly enjoy a genre for what it is. I'm glad he sent me this, though. It's been a while since I've heard a band that is so bleak, so desolate, so apocalyptic. I also hear how Godflesh not only influenced Industrial metal, but the likes of Isis and everyone else in the "atmospheric sludge" genre. Very good listen. I'll be sure to browse through their other releases.

Loathesome Pete sent me Samantha Fish, Cassie Taylor, Dani Wilde - Girls With Guitars (2011). If I remember right, his PM said something about it being right up my alley, and he was pretty much right. I love blues rock, I love blues guitar, and I love it when ladies sing the blues well, and these three most definitely do that.
The album was reminiscent of something Susan Tedeschi would put out, but dare I say, even better. A little more eclectic and groovy. The album starts off really strong and wanes a bit after the third song, but picks back up in the last three or four songs. My fave song was "Mr. Loving Man", and their cover of "Jet Airliner" was pretty rockin. Over all, this one was decidedly a hit. An album that will get many more plays from me. Thanks Pete...good call!
