From my good pal storymilo:
The Royal Tenenbaums OST This was one of those movies that I've always liked a lot, but would have never thought to have checked out in the soundtrack department. But low and behold, it is an excellently eclectic (38 of them!) batch of tunes; for every bit of Nick Drake and Bob Dylan there's a 6-minute classical suite that work great whether in the context of the movie or not. Then again, this being composed by Seymour Hoffman look-alike Mark Mothersbaugh (of Devo), I guess I shouldn't be surprised. Still, the variety here is the strongest draw: there's something for everyone, especially considering the number of tracks present. Hell, there's even some Ramones. Personally however, the tracks I dug most were the Nico ones, such as in 'The Fairest of the Seasons' and 'These Days'; there's just something about the Baroque arrangements and her voice that snuggles in well in the context of the other songs for me, as well as the overall mood. So at the end of the day, I am quite pleased with it all: while other soundtracks I've run across have hit me a little deeper than this one, I can't recall the last time I've enjoyed going through a soundtrack at first listen as much as I've had going through here: quite a blast really! So kudos to story for this OST; I am entertained.

Here's the updated list... +81 Abdullah424 Anteater Bulldog CanwllCorfe GotJuice James44754 NumberNineDream OctaneHugo Unchained Ballad Unrelenting As it happens, I have quite a lot of work to be doing in time for Monday (just having a quick break from it at the moment), so I don't think we'll kick the next trade off 'til early next week. Anyone else who's thinking about joining in, we can never have too many traders, so no need to fret over that. |

^**** album artwork Tick Tock, Tick Tock the noises of Big Ben open this album with "25 'o' clock". A very groovy song with one heck of a sweet bassline. Following this are fifteen more tracks of Psychedelic Pop, That aren't really terribly original but the songwriting is what makes this special. The songwriter really seems to be great based on this and no I haven't heard XTC but based on this album i'm going to . So here are my highlights. The Mole From The Ministry-A great number with some brill drum bits, sounds kind of Beatles-ish. Vanishing Girl-A perfect pop song just so upbeat and awesome you can't help tapping your foot. You're A Good Man Albert Brown-Once again sounds very Beatles-ish and has an amazing singalong vibe Pale And Precious-Awesome song with an amazing Beach Boys sound So all in all I was surprised that this band weren't actually Psychedelic artists as they have the sound perfected. Psych is my third favourite genre and I like to think I have fairly good taste in it and I found this to be pretty solid. And I will most definetly check out XTC. |

^Yes for a band that don't normally make that sort of music it's great.
PS I'm expecting someone to give me some crazy Black Metal or something in this trade should be.................................interesting. |

Who're you again?

Seriously though, the idea is to get something you're not familiar enough with even to hate it - it'll be a way to get hold of something you'v basically been indifferent to but always been willing to at least give a go. A bit of to-and-fro-ing over PMs should sort out what exactly that's gonna be fairly quickly. |

Abdullah424 sent me…
Score! 20 Years of Merge Records. The Covers! To celebrate Merge Records 20th anniversary, the label compiled a collection of songs by Merge artists covered by non-Merge indie artists. I know most of the names here but I’m only familiar with a handful of the bands’ being covered; therefore, I can’t really compare them to the originals. Starting off the album with the sound of their signature overdriven keyboard, is a band I truly enjoy; Quasi. Them, along with Les Savy Fav, rock through the first couple tracks to set the pace. The Shins keep the vibe but replace the electric guitars with some acoustics that compliment the song's upbeat tempo and vocal melody that really carries the song. St. Vincent and The National combine their vocal talents to coolly deliver their quite chill track. The next track is introduced by the voice of a child before Broken Social Scene jump in with a fast paced drum beat and a barrage of guitars. The Bright Eyes track I found to be my least favourite but the Hawaiin-esque reverb laden lead guitar was quite enjoyable. The energy picks up with a synthy pop cover of Neutral Milk Hotel's The Kind of Carrot Flower's Part 3 (one of the few originals on here I've heard before) by The Apples in Stereo. (I'm beginning to bore of writing this...). Some more songs happen, some good, some very mediocre. To sum up, this is a very indie album for indie fans of indie bands covering indie bands. |
