The Golden Torch Story I didn’t really know what to expect of this compilation, but I have to say: it did not disappoint. The minute the drums and backing vocals kick off on the first track, you get sucked into a sunny day outdoors. Fantastic instrumentals like Sliced Tomatoes, which I’m sure sounds familiar to everyone, show up now and then; powerful, soulful, vocal deliveries are everywhere, and you really can’t help but feel contaminated by the whole sound. Why? It’s just the type of music that can make you see how beautiful the world really is; it has Soul’s impact, and is relatively fast-paced which invariably ends up in complete and utter bliss. I must admit my other experiences with Soul weren't pleasant enough, hence my apprehension towards this at first. However, since I didn't exactly know what Northern Soul was about, I decided to put my heart into listening to it, and, well...it was a bit of a mindblower. I now understand what Mr. right-track is all about. There are a few tracks that stuck with me, and I'd like to give them due credit: Nolan Chance - Just Like The Weather Darrell Banks - Angel Baby J.J. Barnes - Our Love Is In The Pocket Duke Browner - Crying Over You Just Brothers - Sliced Tomatoes The Cavaliers - Hold To My Baby Bobby Paris - Pers-o-nally There might be a few more, but whenever I checked the compilation for them I constantly found more and more of them, so I decided to settle with these. Thanks mate, this compilation gave me a few of the aforementioned days, and I must say they were fantastic. |

^ Great to know you're enjoying, and a nice pick of tracks too - the JJ Barnes and Nolan Chance numbers are some of my favourites off of it too. Can't get enough of the Rufus Lumley, Younghearts and Superlatives songs either.
50:50 chance I'll have a review of your album up by tonight too. |

From the vaults of Mr. Unchained Ballad...
The Psychedelic Scene I'm neither here nor there with psychedelia to be perfectly honest. More because I don't really dig around that era of music as habitually as I do with others than anything else, as I do love me some Ogden's Nut Gone Flake, 13th Foor Elevators and so on. The Nuggets compilations are easily as popular as they deserve to be but, apart from those, I hadn't really had another good psychedelic compilation to call my own, so I was pretty enthusiastic when this one was offered up to me (even if it did take me this long to review it). It also helped that, Small Faces and Moody Blues aside, there were no names I recognised among the tracklisting, so I was all over this idea. As I say I'm not exactly a huge fan of psychedelia, so a few of the tracks didn't really grab me as such, but there were plenty of perfectly trippy, spaced-out and sunny numbers to make up for it. On the whole, I prefer my psychedelia when it sounds a bit like the Amboy Dukes' version of Baby Please Don't Go, ie when it has a real kick to it, be it in the shape of the rhythm, organ, piano or whatever. The Felius Andromeda and Societie tracks probably made the best impression of the lot of them on me then, and the Virgin Sleep song is now officially one of my favourite songs. That's not to say there isn't any other merit to this album - there is. Those were the tunes I remember the most though, and I'm sure more will emerge with repeated listens (and the temptation's there, which is another reason I liked this album). So, yeah, thanks for this Mr. Ballad sir |

No Age - Weirdo Rippers This album is a compilation of songs No Age performed during a flurry of live shows which you can actually pick up from the music. All of the songs are lively and full of energy which is something I look for in music so that's definitely a plus. I guess you can classify their music as experimental rock (somebody correct me if I'm wrong) which is a genre I enjoy so that's also a plus. Funny thing is I thought I hadn't heard No Age before although I really enjoyed Nouns. That probably should have led to me listening to this album ages ago so I guess I'm getting senile in my old age. My only beef with this album is that a lot of the tracks are really short. The whole album only takes about 30 minutes to listen to so it was over right when I was really starting to get into it. Overall No Age Weirdo Rippers is a good album, albeit on the short side, that I'd definitely recommend to anyone. Thanks +81 |
