...and loved it btw. Edit: The first time I joined, LoathesomePete didn't review the album I sent, which made me a bit sad... Here, I said it. I think by saying it out loud I can let go of the subconscious grudge.

I think it's time I just force myself to write these reviews.
From abdullah424: Vato Negro - Bumpers (2008) Vato Negro is a side project from the bassist of the Mars Volta, Juan Alderete. Unfortunately, I never gave the Mars Volta a listen, so I can't compare Alderete's work in both projects. Anyway, I loved the album the second I played it. It's solely instrumental, with a lot of electronica arrangements surrounding the drums and the virtuosic bass guitar playing. I don't think I can get hooked on it, as I can't seem to memorise much of it, but I'm sure I'll be listening to it a lot. I loved listening to it while studying, while trying to sleep and of course while rockin' in my car. It's just not hard to be in the mood for it, opposite to what I usually get from listening to electronic music. I'm pretty sure I'll be searching for some Mars Volta albums to download very soon. From GotJuice: The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi battles the pink robots (2002) The Flaming Lips was also a band I never gave a listen, although I heard about them a lot, and this album precisely was highly praised on these boards. So I was fairly excited when I got the album from GotJuice. The first few times I've given this album a try, I just couldn't get through the first 2 songs. I had some kind of problem with it. I couldn't figure out if this album is hard to crack into, or just if it's something I won't enjoy, no matter how much I forced myself. Getting ready for the previous review, I thought I give this one another try, as I won't review an album without giving it the fair amount of chances, and I have to say, this 2 day break really helped. Now still listening to the album, I think I'm very much liking it. From the multi-layered arrangements to the spacey vocals, definitely a grower. Although I'm reviewing it without having heard it completely (I'm now in the 9th track) I think it's safe to say I got my general perception of the album. I might find out later, which of the tracks stood out for me, as for now, all the songs sound of great potential. All I'm saying, I didn't find myself skipping any of them. It was a great trade with both of yous, abdullah424 and GotJuice

Arms and Sleepers - Black Paris 86 I'm a sucker for beat-friendly electronic soundscaping, and Arms and Sleepers certainly deliver on this little prize. Although my mind wasn't blown from the arrangements (IDM is very much a hit and miss genre for me), tracks such as the skittery 'A Mission To Prague' and twinkling 'We're All Paris Now (Pt. 3)' served up some dark, attractive atmospheres for me to wrap my mind around whilst drifting in aimless thoughts about whatever. It's been rainy for the last two days, so my mood was complimented nicely. This is also a rather short album all things considered (48 minutes), making it ideal when you want to chill out to something virtual in feel, but unlike drone, trip-hop, length-heavy nu-jazz or the crushing pulse of a good DnB release. All things considered, I dug this more than I expected: thanks for this Can!

Number9, you should definitely get on the Mars Volta. Every music lover out there should at least give them a chance...start with Deloused in the Comatorium. And it's good to hear you might be jumping on the Flaming Lips bandwagon as well...they have a huge variety of material. Their early work is very psychedelic punk/alternative...totally different from Yoshimi. Everytime I listen to "All We Have Is Now" off that alubm, I get chills...simultaneously sad yet hopeful.

Stavros Lantsias - Return Stavros Lantsias seems to be a Greek pianist, possibly a multi-instrumentalist, though I'm afraid I lack the information to elaborate further (perhaps I haven't tried hard enough). I found listening to the album a quite pleasurable experience. I'd say it's pretty damn fantastic. The violin and the piano feature quite proeminently on it, while several other instruments, which I wouldn't dream of trying to name, give their worthy contribution. It starts off with a certain soothing melancholia, a mood that stays with the whole album on a general note. It has certain film noiresque nuances about it, which make it all the more enthralling (think The Waltz Of June). I like how it sets a certain mood while never fading into the background, which is a common denominator with low caliber instrumental albums, making you hang on every twist and turn. There's a very impressive emotional quality to it, that stands out in tracks like "Quest". It's also a fairly eclectic album, with some middle eastern influences occasionaly popping up, and a wide range of musical arrangements that cover pieces of music like the Waltz and what seems to be something like the Tango, for example. The title of the album, "Return", makes me want to insert the songs in a certain context, a journey, a transformative journey home, perhaps. The whole nostalgia and sullenness that envolve most of the pieces seem to support my claim. The eclecticity seems to give it a more mundane, global, experienced, if you will, feeling; and the occasional romantic, passionate side of the album seems to be reminiscent of loves had and loves lost. I recommend this album vehemently. Thanks for the experience, abdullah. |
