Abdullah424 sent me...

The No Smoking Orchestra - Unza Unza Time

I hated it. It's just too goddamn annoying. I bet these guys sound great live though, after many a beverage that is.

They don't need any beverages, they're the greatest live!

It seems that both Abdullah and I sent Kusturica albums,

Edit: I'm down for the next trade.

Sorry for the late review, been fairly busy recently Anyways, duga sent me...

Of Montreal-The Sunlandic Twins

First time listening to this band, and I'd have to say that on the first two listens, this album is pretty hit or miss for me, which is slightly disappointing because I had heard really good things about this band. Maybe my expectations were just too high, but it wasn't an album that blew me away immediately. I think it could be a grower, though.

As far as what the album sounds like, it's basically indie-pop (hell, screw basically, it is indie-pop). Most of the songs are short, and when the album does hit it's very sweet. Once again though, just felt inconsistent to me and there was never really a point where I was able to really connect with it. Favorite tracks so far though would either be Requiem for O.M.M.2 or else So Begins Our Alabee.

So far I'd give it about a 6.5/10, but I'm hoping it's one of those albums that will blossom over time. Thanks duga!

Glad you found some enjoyable material in there! I think you are right about liking it more over time though...it was a bit of a grower for me. I was inspired to track down all their other material after I heard the Sunlandic Twins, though. I sent that one because it is easily their most accessible (I was considering Skeletal Lamping, but I think you should know what they are about before getting into that album...it is experimental to say the least). If you are at all interested in looking further, check out Hissing Fauna...Are You the Destroyer? It is more consistent, and a bit more experimental than the Sunlandic Twins.

Immanu El - They'll Come, They Come

Ok, I think I've let gotjuice's album absorb into my subconscious long enough. First impressions were pretty good, the opener "Under Your Wings I'll Hide" was relaxing and uplifting, but nothing too special. It gave me a Sigur Ros with more guitars than usual kind of vibe. The next track "Home" is phenomenal...easily my favorite song on the album. It is very relaxing and had a really smooth delayed guitar. The album earned some points on this song. There are a few more pretty strong songs on the album after this, but I couldn't get past the feeling that they were being very Sigur Ros-ish with more of Post Rock vibe. Not that that is bad. I enjoyed the album the whole way through, and honestly this type of music is right up my alley. I just don't think I will be chomping at the bit to listen to it a whole lot.

As far as the theme goes...the album is far from upbeat. It is uplifting, though. It is something I would put on after a stressful day and I need something to chill out to. So, overall, decent album! Thanks, gotjuice!

Ok, so this next trade's gonna look something like this...

Bulldog<--->NumberNineDream
Duga<--->Rickenbacker
Abdullah424<--->DieselBoy

Since there are so few of us this round, let's see if we get the next trade started this time next week. If not, fair play. That one will be themed, so I'll start thinking about what that'll entail.

Also, I know I've got one or two reviews yet to be done, so I'll try and get them up here as soon as possible.

Likewise I'm glad you found some enjoyment in it. I've seen them compared to Sigur Ros a bunch on Last.FM and other sites, I can hear where those comparisons are coming from but not as much as others I guess. I think it's a fairly brilliant mix of post-rock and ambient, which isn't original in and of itself but I don't feel like these guys are ripping anybody off like a lot of dime-a-dozen post rock bands. And like you say, it is a great album for the end of a stressful day.

Bulldog you can go ahead and put me down for the next trade as well, sorry I kind of blew this week off

You're alright. As I say, gonna see if we can get this trade done and dusted by next Sunday, so it's not long to wait. You can take part in this one as well if you like, if anyone else who's already in wants to swap albums with you? If not, let me know and I can organise something for ya.
