I've been listening to an astounding amount of jazz the last few days, which is saying something for me, because I already listen to quite a bit. Free, traditional, big band, bebop, post-bop, fusion... it's been a jazzapalooza. Right now I'm listening to Stan Getz and the Oscar Peterson Trio... I have to say, I've always loved the way that Oscar hums and mumbles along with literally every single one of his solos! Always makes me laugh.

Hey could you give me any recommendations of fusion bands/artists?

Well, the classics are always great... Herbie Hancock's Thrust and Head Hunters, and then Bitches Brew, On The Corner, A Tribute To Jack Johnson, and Live Evil by Miles Davis are all big, big albums in the fusion genre. I am big fans of all of them (Thrust might be my favorite album of all time, any genre).

There are plenty of other great albums and great artists, but this is a good place to start. I hope you aren't wanting any 80's stuff, because in general, I abhor jazz fusion from the 80's... if you are wanting anything from the 80's, go to Anteater, the guy is crazy about that crap. :p:

Thanks. Am checking out one of the Herbie Hancock albums (specifically Head Hunters) right now. There's not any particular decade Im interested in, just any good artists that were important/popular in the genre. I have a bunch of early Chicago albums labeled 'jazz fusion' that I've always really liked but I've never explored the genre past that. Not sure if early Chicago (the first 2-3 albums) is even considered a good example of fusion but it's something I've always wanted to know more of & since you mentioned it I thought I'd ask! Not a big fan of any 80s music in general so I'd probably be more interested in the earlier stuff you recommended :)

I'm also trying to get into Jazz, after someone here recommended BBNG2 in another thread (or was it this thread? Not sure; they posted Limit To Your Love), which I thought was fantastic. Yesterday I tried Bitches Brew, but I've since been told that that may not be the best starting place, so I'm trying the (apparently) more accessible In A Silent Way.

Bitches Brew is pretty damn thick, yeah. In A Silent Way is gonna be easier, but if you want something even more accessible, sometimes even catchy, go with Jack Johnson. It's one of the albums that got me into fusion, and that's mostly because Miles was trying really, really hard to make a rock album. I highly recommend it.

I've become moderately obsessed with Suffocation. Effigy of the Forgotten is just one of the most intense death metal albums I've ever heard, and Frank Mullen doesn't even sound human.

It's a grower of an album, but it's growing on me hard
